So both the US version and the UK version are cut, but in different ways? Is the German one the best then?

Wondering the same.

I also noticed that the German Studio Canal 4K only has DTS HD-MA 2.0 whereas the US Lionsgate Blu-ray has DTS HD-MA 5.1. Does anybody remember lots of surround presence, or is it a mostly front heavy mix? Haven't watched the Blu-ray in ages.

No way they release the cut R rated.
It will be cut and unrated in the USA I bet.
But the BBFC won't let the cock fighting happen

UK press release states -

Optional English SDH, French, and German subtitles for the main feature

No audio details yet, but that could be an indication they're using the same disc for all three countries. Perhaps they'll slip the uncut version past the BBFC without re-submitting? *

*Of course the flip-side to that logic is that they'll foist the cut version on everyone because it's less work for them

The uncut version was actually available in the UK on DVD before - the UK DVD that comes with German audio is supposed to be the uncut version AFAIK. Said DVD wasn't by SC, but it may very well happen here again anyway IMO.

And I'd actually prefer the UK release (no German text on the cover and I can actually get it slightly cheaper), so maybe I'll wait for confirmation. Since September is packed already anyway, waiting until October is actually rather welcome. Don't think I'll be the one to try my luck first here though.

Can't fault SC for their restorations so far. Just watched the trailer for this and it looks amazing. Shame we're let down by compression 95% of the time.

There was an Arrow Blu awhile back that was released in the UK and US ("The Grand Duel"). The UK version had to be cut due to some horse-related violence. Turns out that the US and UK had the same disc. As best I can tell, the disc queried the drive, figured out the region, and played the correct version (seamless branching) based on that. It's possible the 4K will do something similar. Yes, 4K is region-free, but I'm not aware of any 4K-only players. I'd assume there will be something to query.

Of course, I'm assuming SC is competent enough to do this, assuming they even intend to do so. We'll see about that.

Yeah, I was thinking that this might be another Conan-type situation where the uncut version is stored on the UK disc.

Players have location idents as well as region locking, some studios encode their discs to auto detect this and deploy the appropriate playlist & language options for menus, audio etc without the user having to select their country (Fox, Warners) while others put a language select at the head of the disc (Paramount, non-US Universal discs, Disney, StudioCanal).

But I doubt that the BBFC would look kindly upon the uncut version being accessed simply by selecting 'French' or 'German' at startup so it may be authored to auto detect the player location instead. As for authoring it, if David M is involved in any more of their discs then he could get this done with ease.

Language selection is the work-a-round I'm hoping for. The bugger is, if they do use location detection, then even importing the German or French discs won't help us.

To be honest, I can live without the 4 second cockfight so long as it's been elegantly edited. I've always owned the uncut blu-ray so I don't know how well (or not) they've made the change.

Just placed my preorder for the UK release and have my preorder in for the German release. Other than street date, what other differences should I be concerned about beside compression issues with Studio Canal? I'll cancel one of them. Actually the UK release is cheaper for me.

The reviews for DLN, which have been unanimous in praise for the PQ should hopefully of convinced SC to use him more. Sadly I don't think it will though.

I know I read it somewhere and it says so here in the comments of the censored UK BD at any rate: https://ssl.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fa...746&vid=295443

Quote:
Die UK-DVDs mit deutschem Ton sind hingegen ungekürzt
Actually all of the UK DVDs are listed as uncut on the main page as well: https://ssl.ofdb.de/film/1746,Angel-Heart

Whether that is correct I do not know - I don't own any UK DVD of the movie myself.
