Default Speaker Impedance...

I've been shopping around for Speakers and have noticed something interesting. All the speakers that sound good to my ears are rated at 6 ohms or below. My Sony STR-DG910 will only handle 8 to 16 ohms. Now my choices are: (A) Get a crappy set of speakers that are 8 ohms or above or (B) Replace my receiver (the unwelcome alternative). Suggestions anyone?

Sounds like you understand the situation pretty well. Do whatever sounds best and still fits within your budget. I will say that you should have no problem finding quality speakers that have an 8 ohm or larger resistance.

There are alot of good speakers in the 8 ohm range. Paradigms are a good example.

If you don't mind me asking, what speakers have you listened to that you like?

I run 4ohm speakers on my receiver, which is set at 8ohms. You could always get an amplifier if your receiver has "pre-outs". Amps are expensive though.

You could always run a resistor inline.

Or just hook the 6 ohm speakers up. At normal listening levels this shouldn't actually damage anything and when you take the impedance rise of the full system, you're very likely not running at 6 ohms too often.

I'd say 6 ohms would be alright. I ran my Technics with my SR-800 receiver and didn't have too many problems. Just watch the volume level on them though...
