No they weren’t. On 02-25-14 I paid $22.99 for Thor: The Dark World 3D Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. From Best Buy.

The PIXAR / Disney steelbooks (which is what we are talking about) were always $34.99. I'm sure there were a few exceptions, but a lot of the early steelbooks were $34.99.

Even Wall-e at some point came back in stock. So who knows maybe they will milk the pixars like halloween and come up with new design for 4k steelbooks.

I'm talking about the original Wall-E release, not the ones that look like Golden book reject covers.

It was cute for the Toy Story ones (which is why I have them). The original Best Buy steelbooks for them are cool and minimal but pretty boring, and the 3rd one breaks the theme of the first two. The first releases of the Zavvi ones look cool, too but the finish is chalky/cheap.

I wish Disney would have done more inspired releases for the 4K steelbooks. The storybook thing is cute but the spines look so lame and monotonous. Not to mention that the 4K steelbooks had horrible quality control. I did group buys for them for a few international members and I had to exchange so many of them due to dents and scratches.

This one from 2009. It's a bit too minimalistic but it's prety cool in the end. The finish is glossy and the silver streaks really have a cool effect. The purple Blu-fans release has the best design of all the Wall-E steelbooks, but only holds one disc so it was an immediate pass. Especially since it came with a slipcover that I would feel weird getting rid of.

Disney doesn't put nearly as much effort into these as other studios. They're just slapping the poster on them more or less.

The thing is that Disney puts more effort into their posters than other studios, so in the end the steelbooks look pretty cool.

Even the Marvel 4K steelbook re-releases are cool looking, despite the lame weathered look that only really made sense for the Captain America movies (to look like the trading cards in-universe).

I remember doing a group buy for the Disney ones and being impressed by Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Princess and the Frog, and Big Hero 6. Almost made me want to buy my own.
