Didn't see a thread dedicated solely to this, so thought I'd make one. Let's talk about Pokémon. Do you think we will ever see a complete, uncut release of the various seasons stateside, with original intact Japanese audio, language, etc. without all the horrendous dub edits and cuts?

Obviously it would be next to impossible to have both the dub and the original on the same discs, because with the edits they're essentially two different shows. Would you be willing to a pay (a premium) for both editions in one package? What are some of the foreseeable obstacles to releasing a product like this?

Given that the show is nearing 900 episodes, 18 feature films, and 50+ OVAs/specials, it's a ridiculously huge task, one I doubt we will ever see materialize. But I'd like to gauge the interest for something like this; I know I would love a release of this nature, especially for the first 5 seasons.

I would love a premium set with both the English dub versions and the original Japanese versions. Granted, I would want improved PQ as well for a set like this.

I already have some of the Australian season sets and that's the main reason why, though. Because of that I'd be OK with the original Japanese versions being released on their own too.

However, if only given the option of a premium set with both versions, I still think I'd be very interested in such a release.

Stranger things have happened (the Dark Shadows TV show on DVD a year or two ago for example). But Pokémon will never be released on any format complete, due to the problem of the Porygon episode.

The situation with Dark Shadows was a little different (first of all having a 48-year established fanbase): the 2012 coffin set simply collected the 131 discs from the 2002-2008 DVD release, compressing the 32 original volumes down to 22. The DVD sets themselves were preceded by a 1989-1995 254-volume VHS release, so DS had an already well-established history on home video before the coffin.

And while the Pokemon anime is of a similar length to Dark Shadows, it has a unique set of issues which DS lacks to complicate a similar "complete series" release, the chief of those being foreign licensing costs and possible domestic licensing complications. The potential target audiences for both franchises and their levels of disposable income are also significant; when DS began its VHS release, most fans were already well into adulthood (mid-30s to early 50s) while most Pokemon fans now range from children to young adults barely pushing 30. That age (and time) difference makes a sizable contrast in affordability.

Alright folks hit me with the terrible truth. How many seasons and movies are there now? I know for a fact that I'm WAY behind but I want to know HOW behind I am. I stopped somewhere around the Orange Islands so yeah I know I'm behind I just want to know how bad it is. As for the movies, I saw up to 8 or 9.

Wikipedia lists 18 seasons with 850+ episodes (865 airing through March), 37 specials, and 17 films.

The first season was the best, the voice actors pronounced Pokémon correctly (po-kah-mon). In later seasons they pronounced it the way stupid kids and their parents pronounce it (po-key-mon).

Well there's no official releases of the first 3 movies on Blu in america so unless their imports from somewhere, they may be bootlegs. I'd get the first 3 with Japanese language and subs though.

Who knows? It probably depends on where they got the source material to make the Blu-Ray in the first place. They could have gotten it from that big box set that was released in Japan and just made the subtitles themselves, unless that set came with Subs. In that case it's probably as good as it's gonna get unless they've compressed it even more than necessary. Where are you seeing these Blu-Rays anyway?

Probably. Oddly enough I checked Ebay last night and saw Blu-Rays of the first 3. Probably the same ones or similar. But yes clearly they have to be bootlegs cause like I said there's no US releases and I don't know where else has any releases with English and Japanese audio. I know Japan probably doesn't have it. I think their big bad blu-ray set only has Japanese and probably no English subs.

Yeah sorry. I honestly don't know what to tell you other than that. I'd love for the US to get a 3-pack of the first 3 movies on Blu but it seems that they haven't had much luck other than those 4 movies that got a Blu-Ray 4 pack.

I never count an Echo Bridge release vs. the old Miramax DVDs. Though they did release a 4 movie pack and 2 movie pack which included 2 out of 4 of those movies. I think Lionsgate has those movies now or at least Distributing it.

Viz Media only makes DVD releases of the movies even though they release the newer movies.

Warner released the 1st 3 movies but I have no idea if they even still have the rights to those movies or not.

Interesting. There's that big Japan set but as of now I have no way of importing it, and I imagine even if I got it from Amazon.jp, it'd be a LOT of money. Probably more than I'm willing to spend.
