Floored by this announcement. NEVER thought this would be released here in the U.S. My absolute favorite anime series of all time! Don't care how much, this will be mine day one. Super happy about this news and also that Viz has the rights to the novels which will also be mine. Soooooo happy right now!

I guess the question now becomes, how's this going to look in HD? Was it cell animated? Based on its length, and time span of release, it probably went through a few technique changes over its 110 regular epIsodes.

The original OVA was made between 1988 and 1997, so it was definitely cell animated. The Japanese Blu-rays were also upscales, so if Sentai decided to go DVD-only (or SD-BD) it wouldn't be a big deal.

The JP blu-ray release featured several newly re-animated scenes which stick out like a sore thumb though.

So we're gonna get another Sailor Moon?

I really, really, really hope for a proper HD release but doing so Sentai would need to invest in a new transfer, but would they have the funds? I'll guess we wait and start saving our pennies just in case.

Very excited to finally see this, but I fear the release pattern. 12 episode sets at $60 each. Like Space Brothers, tons and tons of episodes, very small sets and high prices. Hope I'm wrong.

And if there is a Collectors Edition with each release then I hate to see how much it will cost before you/me/others have the complete series?

There's no way they'd do that, I think.

Maybe a collector's edition to hold every five volumes, or something. I'd buy that for a dollar!

Was there any update given on the upcoming / potential Blu-ray release at Anime Expo?

I was hoping for some update from Sentai Filmworks by this point. Or hopefully some news this summer during Con season.

This was all that was said:

12:16:59 <bay|AX|Sentai> Q: Anything new on Legend of the Galactic Heroes?
12:16:43 <bay|AX|Sentai> A: It's progressing in a way that only a work in progress can progress
12:16:48 <bay|AX|Sentai> It's a huge project
12:17:12 <bay|AX|Sentai> it's over 4000 minutes of content

Really, Sentai? Really? Just over 20 words to describe how those 4000+ minutes of content are coming along?

Does anyone know how good/bad the Japanese transfers were?

I just finished reading the first novel, LotGH: Dawn. It's excellent military scifi. Can't wait for the next one latter this month.

All I know is they're upscales and not that much better than the DVDs as a result. If only they had properly remastered it instead... It's cel-animated, not digitally-animated. Shame this list keeps growing...
