Cool INSIGNIA - Region Free BD Players

INSIGNIA NS-WBRDVD3 (3D Model) :

NOT ABLE TO BE REGION FREE

REGION FREE FIRMWARE FOR THE INSIGNIA NS-BRDVD4-CA :

REGION FREE FIRMWARE FOR THE INSIGNIA NS-BRDVD4 :

http://www.4shared.com/file/qRak_U8L..._B083_022.html -- CONFIRMED TO WORK

firmware instructions:

http://db.tt/Be1IV3ha

Note: make sure USB drive is free of ANY files BEFORE you download the firmware to it!!

ATTN:
When downloading the firmware to a USB drive this MUST be done on a MS Windows box it will NOT work using a Apple Mac. The reason is the files are encoded in the FAT file system and Mac doesn't use that type of file system so it isn't seen on the Mac and when you go to install it on the Insignia it will error as nothing on the USB drive. This has been confirmed by myself and 2 others.

after the firmware is correct, this is how to access the option :

1. Turn on the player
2. 'Press' the Home/Setup button (do not hold the button)
3. Enter 9113
4. A configure menu should appear on the left with all the other option icons
5. Scroll through the menu and pick what region the disc is.

Insignias convert PAL to NTSC and play 50hz.

NS-BRDVD4 = no WiFi
NS-WBRDVD2 = WiFi

Thanks to 'HyperRealist' & 'ytsejam1138' for uploading the firmware & some extra info

Thumbs up

Good idea, when I was setting up my NS-WBRDVD2 I was searching through the other thread to find your post.

Also, when you download the firmware via PC to USB drive, download directly onto it instead of copy/pasting it. It's mentioned in the PDF but I still didn't do it :P And make sure the drive is empty beforehand.

Another place I got stuck on was holding Home/Setup, you can just press it, then enter 9113 and the menu will appear on the left side between the other menus.

I just got my refurbished NS-WBRDVD2 delivered from Best Buy last night. Out of the box, the remote didn't work with the supplied batteries. So I bought new batteries and it was working for a bit. The hack worked without the firmware upgrade though! I went ahead and bought an extra remote off E-bay in case the remote goes dead. Many thanks.

The player is no longer responding so I think I got a lemon. I'll check if it responds with the extra remote I bought when I get it, but I doubt it.

I also got a bad remote apparently. I just called Insignia and they were able to order a new one for me! Hope this helps those whose remotes arrive DOA like mine.

Has anyone here notice the difference in Picture Quality between the Insignia and the PS3?? i have both and notice a big difference in quality, the Dark areas on the Insignia look grey-ish kinda like foggy. the ps3 handles the Dark scenes Perfectly. Also maybe its just me but the color on the Ps3 looks more Vibrant more WOW!!! i would like to hear from other members that noticed some differences. and i know its not the different Video codecs from different regions, i played Justified on both players and yes there was a difference.

getting ready to order one of these insignias, are there differences in the models NS-BRDVD2, NS-BRDVD3, and NS-BRDVD4? is the NS-BRDVD4 going to be a better player with more features than the other two listed here?

I wish Insignia's players had a better reputation. I'll probably still buy one and hope for the best as it does appear to be the simplest way to get Region Free support on the cheap.

There probably is and if not soon will be a way as it is a new player from this year. Althought It is not a firmware update provided by Panasonic. There are ppl who claim to be panasonic enthusists that are trying to better panasonic items in the after market. You have fill out some sort of application and then "donate" (pay 'em) for the software to download. They do not guarentee it to work. I'm sure it probably does but I was not willing to take the risk of turning my BD player into a paper weight.
Also if the player is not equiped with a PAL coverter chip inside it will not always play region B/2 stuff. Not to mention the 1080/60 standard region A coding as some region B discs are encoded with 1080/50. Not sure but I think that is what the chip converts aswell as dvd format Pal-Europe and NTSC-US

Thank you very much for your reply.

The NTSC x PAL would not be an issue for me, I believe.

I remember from the olden days a site that had for several DVD player brands ways to make them region free by means of a combination of clicks on their remote controls. Isn't there anything similar fr BluRay players?

Side comment...in this day an age of download contents I don't see the point of making discs as well as players region-specific.

Thanks again.

I did the swap. The remote worked. Flashed the player, did the hack and it worked. I popped the Region B Blu-ray from Warrior and it played. With no problem.

I'm sure that this might have been covered in an earlier thread, but after scouring thru I couldn't find an answer...

...can you use just a regular universal remote? Or is there a specific remote?

As much as I love the player, the remote really does suck!

Actually it was covered a couple times in this thread. The only remote known to work for the hack, other than the original Insignia remote, is the Harmony brand. But of course there may be others but no one has found it yet if you try another remote and it works let us know

I have problem play back recent Twilight Time Blu-ray like Picnic and Demetrius and the Gladiators.

The disc was loaded , it played the FBI warning and Twilight Time logo, but when it got to the main manual, the player displayed "WAITING", and I cannot chose any option nor start the movie. (I tried to search chapter function on the remote, also no luck.)

Anybody has the same issue? I never update my player (so I can keep the region free hack.)

I'll check the playability of Demetrious and the Gladiators once I get home.
