You know how your family suffers in the beginning of a new piece of HT hardware...You can't watch a movie all the way through without opening up the menu to tweak something here and there...you know?

I did notice a difference in 1080P image from my OPPO 93 vs the same blu ray using my Panny 820 (or I the Sony 800). The 1080P upscaled from the UHD players gave me better shadow detail and inky black levels. The same disc played from the OPPO 93 showed grayish black levels and less defined shadow detail.

I haven't browsed the settings people are recommending or done much tweaking on my own yet...so I'm sure I'm missing something.

That being said, the black levels are back to what I expect from JVC vs the 540. I couldn't be happier so far with the image.

The 820 is said to upscale 1080p to 4K extremely well. I recall one person who compared it to MadVr which is said to be 'king' and that the two images were very close.

I've been told these new units have an image that looks a little more natural vs. the e-shift. Do you see that?

I will be upgrading this fall to either the RS1000 or its replacement model for 2022.

I'm around 2400 hours on my lamp and the loss of light is becoming apparent, but I am not putting anymore money into this projector.

You hit the nail on the head. Besides black level, the more natural look of the image vs a digital image was really apparent. It's funny what we get used to when viewing hours of a projector. The 540 is an outstanding unit, but in comparison, the NX series projects a natural more film like image.

If one can afford or wants to invest their HT budget in the NX 7 or 9, I can't imagine what that next level would look like...outstanding is what I'd bet. So for me ignorance is bliss. The NX5 is the sweet spot for price/performance in stepping up to a true 4k projector.

If it's any solace, the consensus I've seen from reliable people is...it seems to be the contrast is very similar between the NX5 and NX7 with the iris wide open (20K:1 vs 25K:1K) in high lamp which is how most people use UHD. With 1080p SDR on the NX7, one might be able to close the iris down further and get more contrast still. The NX7 P3 filter is reallly only noticeable with foilage scenes and in an A/B comparison with both units properly calibrated. Both units with same lens. For me personally, very hard to justify the NX7 given the NX5 capablities and price. The NX9 is closer to 30K:1 contrast and the improved lens seems to give more clarity, but for an $18,000 MSRP projector, I would hope so! On any rate, I am getting more excited to upgrading. The NX5 is hands-down the best projector under that $8,995 MSRP price point.

The NX5/RS1000 is a fantastic projector. I had one installed today to replace an older JVC DLAX700. I'm wondering if anyone here with this projector has run into the following:

After watching a few minutes of a UHD disc and being wowed, I put on a 3D Blu-ray and found the picture incredibly dark. I discovered that if I tilted my head 90 degrees the picture lightened considerably. After doing some sleuthing, I found that JVC is now using vertical polarization on the NX models versus horizontal polarization that was used on the DLA-X models.

I found a recommendation for the Xpand X105-RF-X1 glasses and bought a pair. I hope they do the trick because I want to expand my 3D BD collection this year.

Yes, JVC changed the polarization with NX series. I got the same glasses. They are great.

Unfortunately my iPad isn't pulling up a keyboard when try to search within the thread, so pardon if it's been discussed. Has anyone use the autocal with the spyder X pro?

If so, any tips? Were you happy with the results?

I went ahead and ordered a SpyderX pro to try the JVC autocal. We will see if a complete newbie and perform the calibration.

Thanks!

Already have that covered, since btw Arcam and other processors internal calibrations required a good tri-pod.

Is this a Spyder that's good ?

I had a few of the Spyder color meters and the accuracy was somewhat random.

I currently have an i1d3 and i1pro spectrometer. Have a long standing disrespect of the spyder hardware but maybe it's been improved.

Virtually all Spyder are not good for low luminance displays such as projectors, especially for lower than 40 IRE readings. However, they are “good enough” for non-serious hobby use.

It's fun to learn with I guess.

Seems the i1d3 is only $30-ish Dollars more than any and every Spyder and has a long standing good reputation.

That's my goal as first time effort.

Question for NX7/NX9 owners running their projectors in high lamp mode.

I've been running mine in low lamp mode and recently changed it to high because of a very dark movie. Watching a few movies in high lamp mode, it's hard to go back to low because it really feels like everything get dark.

Besides less lamp hours, are there any other potential issues with running the projector in high lamp mode at all times?

Just a slight reduction of the laser life and the projector fan will spin faster and create a little more fan noise.

Life span of these projectors to half life are reportedly; low 40,000 hours, Medium 30,000 hours and High 20,000 hours.

Not that bad a trade off to me. How do you typically run your projectors, Robert? Low or high lamp mode?
