Not a fan of Kirk or Shatner himself. Despite what he would like to be, he is not what made Star Trek. Perhaps he should "Get a Life"

Season 2 Episode 3 The Changeling.
Kirk out thinks Nomad, getting it to destroy itself in order to complete it's new programming because it is flawed, mistaking Kirk for the creator.

Season 2 Episode 8 I, Mudd
Gets Norman {the head android and mobile Master pc} To implode with the famous sequence:
KIRK: He lied. Everything Harry tells you is a lie. Remember that. Everything Harry tells you is a lie." Harry then says "Now listen to me carefully Norman, I am lying" Norman's cpu literally goes up in smoke.

Season 2 Episode 24 The Ultimate Computer
Gets the M5 to attempt suicide when Kirk makes it realize it committed murder.

More than wits.
He had the knowledge and the ability to pull it off.
Got a commendation for original thinking.

But, I believe Picard is a far better leader. Kirk pretty much gets by purely on instinct and brawn, and relies heavily on Spock and McCoy for wisdom. Picard has his own wisdom, and only relies on others for input and perspective. Therefore, he's better at making command decisions, imo. He makes it so.
Its a interesting competition but I agree that Picard was regularly involved in more situations where he had to strategize against his opponents then Kirk who constantly was more hands on with his team. So within the storylines both Captains were exposed to many nightmarish situations, but Picard was better acting alone.
