The best description of Charmed I heard was in college when a professor described it as "Like Buffy, but for incredibly stupid people".

I'll most likely get some flack for it, but decades later, I'm more inclined to watch a Charmed episode than a Buffy one.
I thing BTVS aged very badly in terms of dialogue. Most of the characters have the same voice and their pathological need to be extra quippy makes them annoying and almost unbearable - especially when the trio? (Scooby Gang minus Giles) is investigating. Although, their character arcs are more satisfying across the seasons/series, if you accept that Willow and Alex are absolutely terrible friends to Buffy. On an episodic level, I get more fulfilment from a Charmed episode where the chemistry between the sisters (both sets) is fantastic and they all get their own B-stories which ties into the main one in a way that was more flexible than Buffy, where the structure of the scripts were drier? more obvious? Charmed handled humour a lot better than Buffy due to them comedic timing of the actresses - Alyson H. never did it for me, and Nick's was mostly "aw shucks"/dumbassery-based. Now, Charmed's lows were verrrrry low and the some arcs/seasons reached depths that not even BTVS S7 or S4 ever managed to. Plus, all the main characters become so deeply unlikable by the end of the series, it's almost fascinating. |

With my rewatch I recently finished Buffy S06.
The first time I enjoyed more the later seasons, with the rewatch it's the opposite: I enjoyed immensely more seasons 1-2-3. Season 6 have some of the best episodes, but plot-wise have Whedon's worst decisions (Dark Willow, urgh). I also changed my mind on all the characters: Xander, Willow and even Spike (changed my mind overnight on him) are almost unbearable. Anya and Dawn underrated. I focused on thing I didn't like, but I still find the show terrific ![]() |
