Thanks James for letting us know about "A Photograph". Another title to add to the (long) list of titles I'm interested in getting (the Play for Today boxset).

Airing in the early hours of this coming Thursday morning on Talking Pictures TV is "a documentary-style lost short" called Salisbury Hall: The Ghost of Nell Gwyn. It stars Margaret Rutherford and her husband Stringer Davis (source: Sky TV listings). Not seen this before.
Have checked the IMDb, and it turns out there was a TV film which aired in the States on NBC called The Stately Ghosts of England. The UK title is Salisbury Hall: The Ghost of Nell Gwynn. There were three segments. Looks like Talking Pictures TV are only showing one of the three segments. |

Hoping to see some reviews of Short Sharp Shocks up soon (out next Monday). Usually, Mondo Digital reviews some BFI titles (as does DVD Beaver).

I know it's Black Friday week, but it's typical that all the offers and sales are happening around the same time. HMV on their website have a discount code for the BFI's release of Short Sharp Shocks.

I dithered a bit with getting Short Sharp Shocks from HMV (using the 20% off discount code), missing out on getting a few pounds knocked off the listing price.
Haven't yet looked at the full fortnight's worth of listings in the Christmas and New Year double issue TV listings magazine (just up to Christmas Day so far). Noticed that BBC Two are showing on Christmas Eve, repeats of MR James-related programmes: - Martin's Close (10:15 pm - 10:45 pm) - The Dead Room (10:45 pm - 11:15 pm) - The Lost Ghost Story with Mark Gatiss (11:15 pm - 0:15 am). Does anyone know if there will be a new Ghost Story for Christmas this year?

Off topic but for people who like ghost stories, there is one that is on YouTube from a show called 'Way Out hosted by Roald Dahl. The pilot is pretty eerie and it's called Dissolve to Black. Check it out. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to ever be released on home video along with the 13 other episodes. |

Thanks for posting about 'Way Out. Have looked into this series, and a book was written about it (it's available on Amazon). |

There is an adaptation of William Hope Hodgeson's A Voice in the Night, which isn't exactly a ghost story but falls into the category of what was called "ghost stories" when it was published. It is on YouTube but everyone says it is too dark. I have a 16mm print of it but my telecine died. It was made for the show Suspicion.
Another Hodson ghost story was adopted and was a proposed pilot for a psychic detective series that never was bought, called the Wishing Room. I had this on 16mm and made a VHS copy at some point. It wasn't particularly creepy though. Another that I had on 16mm was A.M. Burrage's playmates which might qualify as creepy for TV for it's time. I sold this as well after making a copy. I still have A Voice in the Night though, but never watched it. You may find these all on YouTube. Last edited by vortexx; 01-12-2021 at 07:35 AM. |
