^ Both video and audio are very good. Disc size is 45GB resulting in a very high bitrate.

I watched Jomonte Suvisheshangal (JS) some days ago on Prime.
JS is a conventional family drama about how the change in a family's fortunes lead to the wayward son pulling up his socks and working to reverse their predicament. Mukesh is the patriarch of the large family with several kids (and their spouses). Dulquer is the youngest son that receives a lot of indulgent love, but is also considered on account of his actions, as irresponsible. This is dealt with in a humorous and affectionate manner, and we are left in no doubt that even with the petty arguments and Dulquer's tendency to casually resist the father's attempts to reform him, there is a strong familial bond bond between the two. The change of fortunes occurs when aggressive businessman father takes on an ambitious project for which he mortgages the entire family assets, and it gets blocked in a legal wrangle. While most of the family criticizes the old man for his brashness in making the gamble without consulting them, it is Dulquer who steps up in his defence. Moving to a separate smaller dwelling, Dulquer tries for a fresh start to support his old man. There are initial hitches thanks to his inexperience in business, and there is a period where he hides facts from the father. He is then forced to take up a lowly sales job in which he has to lug large bags of samples and make the rounds of potential clients to get orders. The rest of the film is how he manages to eventually better his father's position, and what happens in his own life. While JS is sentimental, the use of humor and restraint in most of the scenes keeps it bearable. This is not like the glycerine-soaked 80's Tamil family drama starring Visu or the numerous Kalpataru directed Bollywood movies with titles that started or ended with "Ghar". The interaction between Dulquer and Mukesh has a lot of charm. But this is also an unnecessarily stretched out film with a 2.5 hr running time that is not justified by the screenplay, and some of the sentiment becomes cloying (we didn't really need that anti-smoking message). All things considered, it was an okay one-time watch, especially with mums that adore sentimental dramas. Last edited by ravenus; 01-12-2021 at 07:42 AM. |
