Open Matte DVDs

Seems like this was a missed opportunity for titles of the video store era. The shower scene in See No Evil, Hear No Evil makes way more sense in open matte, for example.

Some were even compressed unnecessarily to DVD5 and way under 4.37GB size. If they'd had used DVD9 discs it would had been preserved a lot better.

Enchanted April is presented in the broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on the BBC DVD release (more information at the top and bottom, but a minor amount lost from the left and right), whereas Miramax’s DVD release is in 1.85:1 with a tighter image.

CARS is probably the most important one. Full open matte.

Keep in mind that many of the open matte DVDs on this thread have been superseded by open matte HD streams

Many of the releases of "Equilibrium" are open matte on BD. The original US and Canada releases were.

There are a few Canadian discs I can think of:
Brooklyn's Finest (VVS Films)
Sunshine Cleaning (Entertainment One)
Blade (Alliance)
Se7en (Alliance)
Derailed (Alliance)
The World's Fastest Indian (Alliance) - I think the US release is open matte, too

Source Code - opened to 1.78:1 on BluRay. Then back to 1.85:1 on UHD.

Polish distributor Monolith released some movies in 1.78:1 instead of 2.39:1, sometimes cropped (Fighter), sometime open matte - Rambo (2008) or The Expendables. We have also 3:10 to Yuma remake and Equilibrium in 1.78:1 but I dont know if that's open matte or just cropped on the sides.

Does Pulp Fiction have an OM/FS release somewhere? I was just looking for a full screen DVD release of it, but it doesn't seem to exist?

I doubt we'd see much of what's in the suitcase which is what would make me wanna watch it in OM/FS even more.

Final Destination 3 from Alliance in Canada was another title that was 2.35:1 in the theatre but 1.78:1 open matte on Blu-ray.

I think films that were originally shot on Super35mm were often transferred as open matte (1.78:1) on Blu-ray, especially from Alliance in Canada.

Since this title was shot as 2.35:1 Panavision Scope, there is no "open matte" version where you would see extra footage on the top and bottom.

I think I've only seen Pulp Fiction 4:3 full screen on VHS and it's horrible to watch. So many scenes did not lend themselves to a 1.33:1 ratio.

But 2.35:1 to 1.78:1 is trash. I wish they would just leave every single theatrical ratio (with the exception of IMAX scenes in 2.35/39/40:1 being 1.78:1 instead of 1.44:1) EXACTLY as it was in the theater. No matter how small the alteration. An alteration is an alteration..

I wish they'd also give the option to preserve 1.44:1 IMAX when available as an alternate option. Still particularly sticks in my craw that I've only ever once gotten to see The Force Awakens Falcon scene in full 1.44:1 and that was at an amazing 6P Laser IMAX auditorium back in early 2016 or any of Interstellar in 1.44:1 since I saw once in a real film IMAX theater when it came out.

Yeah I know it works different on a home set, but I'd still love the option to see the original cinematography on those since it was much better.
