Can I use a 3D player & glasses to watch a 3D Blu-ray in 3D on a 2D 1080p HD display?

I apologize if this is in the wrong thread and all that, but I have what I hope is a straightforward and 'unique' question.

The main page is gaining more and more news boasting 3D Blu-Ray technology, "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" is coming, as well as the inevitable Avatar. I haven't found anyone talking about 3D Blu-Ray specifics yet. For example, I have a 57 inch Mitsubishi LCD TV that puts out at 1080p, and a PS3. With the PS3's upcoming 3D upgrades via firmware updates, will I be able to pop in "Avatar", choose the 3D section on the disc, put on some 3D glasses and be set? Or do I have to upgrade to a 3D TV?

I don't know the answer, because I have not been keeping up with the 3D news. However, the whole point of 3D is to get consumers to spend more money on electronic equipment. So what do you think?

What you will need to buy is a 3D-Ready TV and the 3D processor that fits it. Of course, the higher-end 3D TVs will already have the processor built in, while the more economical models will require you to buy the processor separately. Depending on the TV you buy, you will get one or two pairs of 3D glasses with it, and extra glasses will cost anywhere from $50 to $100.

The biggest problem is knowing what type of 3D TV to buy. You have choices between LCD, LED, Plasma or CELL, with each being unique in its own way. No need to rush making a decision, though. You'll have to wait at least until May for the first models to roll out.

That totally sucks that I can't use my year-old 42LG70. I heard that some 120 Hz tvs were 3D upgradeable though. Is that not true? If it is, then how do I know that my LCD is 3D ready?

Just about all existing 120Hz TVs only take a maximum input of 1080p at 60z then internally process that to display at 120Hz. Lacking a way to actually input a 1080p/120 signal (or an alternative of two 1080p/24 video streams) means no support for use with the new 3D Blu-ray players. There are also other factors such as having the circuity to allow LCD shutter glasses to sync with the alternating right and left images as they are displayed.

if you want 3D you will need a new 3D TV and a new 3D blu-ray player

I have a PS3 with the latest sw upgrade and recently got a 3d tv. I assumed that I would just pop in my 3d movie and the technology would sort itself out.

The movie is "Open season" by Sony. When I load it it gives the option to play in 2D or 3D. 2D is fine but when I choose 3D it comes back with a message that I need a 3D enabled TV. Its as if the PS3 is expecting some confirmation from the TV before it sends the 3D content. Any clues?

Will the ps3 play all blu-rays? My toshiba blu-ray player is having problems playing some blu-rays and i am planing to get a 55" led-lcd 3d hdtv in a month. also will it fit on top of my tivo hd or my hd-dvd player?

Once you get a 3D TV you need to reset the PS3 video settings so it knows it is connected to a 3D TV. The PS3 will not automatically detect a 3D TV.

You will not see a 3D image, if that is your question. You will see the movie in 2D.

To enjoy 3D HD at home you need a:


3D HDTV (with 3D glasses)
3D Blu-ray player (PlayStation 3 supports 3D as of September 2010)
3D Blu-ray movies

If so what do I need to make this work?

It does, actually. The firmware update enabling that came out a while ago.

No, won't work, sorry. I wanted to do this years ago with an LG monitor and a PS3. To watch 3D Blu on your ASUS monitor you'll need a PC, nVidia 3D Vision (and compatible graphics card) and some playback software like PowerDVD.
