Paramount has previously taken the separate 11 season sets for Cheers and sold them in a "complete series" bundle, shrink-wrapping them together in "brick" fashion. But now, for the first time ever, Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing a bone fide package of Cheers - The Complete Series on DVD! This 45-disc set with all 11 seasons (270 episodes) is expected to have all the same content, including extras, as the individual season sets. It will be in stores on May 5th. Here's the great new packaging for this title...

I was really excited about this until I read "DVD" and "same discs as before." HD masters exist for this series. Hopefully one day they'll see the light of day on blu.

I think they'll probably wait to see how this new DVD set sells; Paramount doesn't want to waste a ton of cash on something again, like they did with "Star Trek TNG".

If this were a blu release I'd be all over it! I grew up watching Cheers with my dad so buying the entire set of 11 seasons would definitely be a trip down memory lane. Not until it come to blu-ray though. Paramount could easily make these look phenomenal just like the Star Trek series. Hopefully, the DVD sets sell well so they'll revisit this series in HD.

I'm most curious about the packaging. Will it be eleven regular-sized DVD cases in a slipbox? Or will it be "book style" like the Seinfeld complete series?

This was around ~$90 on Amazon for a while but the price shot back up to ~$106 the other day.

I'll probably get this eventually and sell off my individual season sets to get back some of the money. I'm always looking for ways to free up shelf space, and 8 out of 11 of the Cheers sets are in those big boxes, this could be a good way to do that.

Frasier is also coming out with a complete series set. I'd love to free up space with that too. All but one of those come in big fold-out boxes.

I imagine it will be packaged just like other recent Paramount complete series sets (Family Ties, Beauty and the Beast, Taxi, etc). Scroll down to the user reviews for pics of the Taxi set:

I swear I read something on tvshowsondvd about paramount/CBS working on blu rays of their shows
I remember they said they were working on Taxi! which is kind of ironic as there was a number of years inbetween a few seasons being released on DVD
We've had both the Cheers and the Frasier box set over here for a number of years,picked up Frasier last year for £40 which is around $60

I've been watching them in HD on GOLD and they look great, there are some iffy bits but they certainly don't look like standard definition. They're in 4:3 too.

I was never a huge fan of Cheers, but I've been thoroughly enjoying them.

There's definitely some missing music in some episodes, but I don't know specifics.

Also, Cheers is down to ~$75 now so I'd definitely pre-order now.

Now if only Frasier's price will drop before it comes out that would be perfect.

I bought the UK Frasier box back in 2009. I have an all region DVD player. The DVDs always looked great, until I got my newest TV.
The standard definition just doesn't look very good at all now, and I even have to adjust the screen size.
Makes sense to me. The TV was waaay upgraded, the discs were not.
Not being Region 1, no brick and mortar will buy it.

I'm thinking it might be the player, not the discs, because even the setup menus have that same funky VHS look to them.

Anyone here with a better region free player that wants the set, I'd take $50.+shipping for it.

In The UK at least, the Complete season package for Cheers has them all in a similar fashion (2 massive cases in a cardboard slipbox), whereas for Frasier however, they had a snazzier format, which is interesting. Both have been out for years in the UK. I wouldn't get those however as I prefer the NTSC format as there's no PAL speed-up for those shows. Nice to finally have a complete season package in one set. Before this came out i'd thought about getting all the seasons individually but the discs would be physically older and some I believe were released in a more slimline format, which I don't like as it would be inconsistent.

At least with shows like these they should be a bit less of a headache to remaster from film cos there's rarely any complex CGI stuff that needs to be re-created.

Forgot to post when I got it but I really like the Frasier complete series. It comes in two big cases inside of a slipbox. Case one has seasons 1-6 and case two has seasons 7-11. I like this soooo much more than having ten big fold-out boxes (and one regular-sized DVD case for season 2), it frees up so much space and it's much more convenient.

One tiny nit to pick: none of the discs have art. They're all just plain silver with the episode titles on them. It's really a non-issue since I'm not watching the discs, I'm watching the show, but it's very boring-looking lol.

Really looking forward to Cheers in a couple weeks. It'll be nice to get rid of the eight big boxes and three regular-sized cases lol.

Also, how come Frasier DVDs always come out before Cheers? I didn't buy them one at a time when they all originally came out, but I remember waiting for the last couple seasons of Cheers on DVD, while all of Frasier had been out for a while.

Wish it was BLU ray also. I watched a few season one episodes on Netflix in HD years ago and I couldn't believe hwo great they looked! It looked like it was just shot on film. I would spring big time for a BLU ray set. But the DVD collection seems nice but I know their HD masters look good enough not to release.
