Loving this player so far. My only gripe with it (and it seems the series as we have a 3500 that does this too), is that it takes a long time to shut down. It's minor, but I want to make sure it's off before I leave.

Ive got the 5500. I read over on AV Forums (see their review section and its one of the latest there) that the 4K upscaling may be better handled by your 4K TV - so you could be better off with the cheaper 5500. Anyway, have a look for yourself (I cant link right now).

I have had my 5500 for awhile now and as I have said before its a great little player. Plays everything I throw at it without a hiccup. I have been through alot of Blu ray players over the last few years and this one is a keeper.

You use VUDU on it? Seems to behave oddly for me. |

I bought a Sony BPDS6500 at Target today when I returned a malfunctioning Samsung BD‑J5700.
(The Samsung did a stellar job with most Blu-rays, but had random screen lag issues with 20th Century Fox discs, namely the six Star Wars movies and Home Alone.) This Sony BDPS6500 was only $99.99 at Target, so I decided to bite down. I'm extremely happy with the choice so far, having sampled a couple of my Blu-rays (The Empire Strikes Back and Tomorrowland). This player works fine with my LG 49" 4K UHD television. With the "4K upscaling", colors seems to be a little more pronounced with this Sony player, although that might just be self-serving perception on my part. The setup process was easy and trouble-free. My player connected to the internet right away after I entered my Wi-Fi security code, and the menu is pretty simple. So far, this player seems to make less noise than my Samsung models did. That's good. I'm not wild about the small remote, after having been accustomed to the bigger Samsung Blu-ray player remotes previously, but it's pretty simple to use. I do not have any need for the 3D Blu-ray player options, since I have lazy eye in my right eye and since my television is not set up for it, but everything else makes this player worthwhile to me. I've owned three Samsung Blu-ray players since I became Blu-ray capable in 2012. The first Samsung worked well for two years, and then started having trouble accepting discs. My second Samsung worked fine for a year and half until it started pausing randomly from time to time and having trouble accepting discs. I only had my third Samsung for a week and a half before taking it back to purchase this Sony. I don't really worry too much about these things, since they're always under $100 and I like the idea of something "disposable" that will not break the bank to replace. Besides, I always pay nine dollars or so for the two-year protection plans, so I've only had to pay for one Blu-ray player so far. Still, I'm hoping that this Sony BDPS6500 will last me a little longer than my previous Samsungs. Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-03-2015 at 08:35 PM. |
