If you're referring to the typical BDPS6500 sold now for around $100 at BB or Amazon, it's definitely NOT region-free. If you're paying what seems to be an unusually high price (around $200) it's likely a region-free modified player. Better ask the seller to be sure.

I've read about 'modding' the player for mutli-region, but it seems way too complicated: ordering hardware from a shady company overseas, disassembling the player with screwdriver...

I did not know if talk of mod chips was allowed in this forum, so I did not directly mention it. However, it's a much more cost effective way of doing it and from my experience, if you do it wrong, it won't break anything on the player, the region mod just won't work until you fix it.
