The lack of new content has brought about a positive for disc, lots of old catalog that may not have made it to disc otherwise. I have added several to my collection. Added more 3-D in 2020 than any other year and more waiting for release.

Very glad to be an optimist, pessimist must lead and lives.

TENET roared back to 38% UHD market share last week -- and that's in its fifth week of release. That movie is selling a helluva lot of 4K discs. One can only imagine that NO TIME TO DIE would have had similarly impressive numbers.

The week of January 11-17 was an even slower week for releases on blu-ray. Only 47 items were released and none could be considered a major new release and there was not a single 4K title among them.

Brand new movies drive disc sales; without them we get results like these. Also, January is a slow month for disc releases; it always has been.

But get your umbrellas out because the "sky is falling" warnings should be coming any moment now.

Oh yes and it won't be long before DEG numbers are posted showing how well pay TV SVOD is doing.

That statistic is nothing new. For the last 10 years it has been negative - long before streaming became super popular. You can review 2011 to 2020 here at the DEG Industry Data:

What many of us have known for years and a few still refuse to believe (info posted at Media Play News):

Top-selling Warner DVD/Blu-ray Disc releases in 2020 included Joker and Birds of Prey, which took in $51.2 million and $30.2 million in combined disc sales, respectively, since their January and May retail releases. Warner had little new content in the retail pipeline thereafter.

A lack of major new releases heading into 2021 has left retailers with few options for refreshing their DVD and Blu-ray sections.

Some, such as Best Buy, continue to promote catalog sales on its website, such as Blu-ray Discs as low as $7.99. Best Buy did present the week’s modest slate of new releases, but without any exclusives attached to them.

Meanwhile, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment reported fourth-quarter (ended Dec. 31, 2020) revenue of $266 million, which was down 3.7% ($10 million) from revenue of $276 million in the previous-year period. For the fiscal year, sales of DVD/Blu-ray Disc and digital movies topped $944 million, off 1.3% ($13 million) from 2019.

Top-selling discs in 2020 included Trolls: World Tour with $48 million (2 million discs) in revenue; and 1917 with $39.2 million (1.8 million discs) in revenue.

Universal contends the 18 movies released on PVOD in the past 10 months generated four times what the studio expected to earn in the traditional home entertainment window. In total, the combined in-home consumer represented more than $500 million, according to Michael Bonner, the newly appointed president of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Some here reminds me of a poster (Bob) at AVS during the early days of 8VSB vs COFDM. This particular poster was a big cheerleader of COFDM would post any and everything that was positive about COFDM. He continued to rail against 8VSB for many years after the FCC ruled (for the second time) that 8VSB would be used for TV broadcasting.

While I’m sure sales will pick up in the Spring, UHD/Blu-ray sales dropping to sub 25% is simply shocking. My original prediction of three years to reach the tipping point of mass market to micro market may require adjustment.

At this point and based on these numbers, it may be a matter of months, not years.
