Default Hitachi developing a Blu-ray camcorder

http://news.com.com/Hitachi+concocti...3-6122116.html

Hitachi concocting Blu-ray camcorder

MAKUHARI, Japan--The company that's fond of putting DVD recorders and hard drives into video cameras will next try to bring out a Blu-ray camcorder.

Hitachi will try to come out with a video camera with a built-in Blu-ray burner in one to two years, Hiroto Yamauchi, general manager of storage products marketing at Hitachi, told News.com during an interview at Ceatec, a large Japanese trade show taking place here this week.
"I hope it is one year," said Kazuto Shimagami, senior manager in the company's storage products division.
The camcorder would not include a conventional drive using discs 12 centimeters in diameter. Instead, Hitachi wants to incorporate a Blu-ray burner that would use 8-centimeter disks, the two executives said. Those drives and the disks that would go in them do not exist yet; the companies involved in Blu-ray are currently fleshing out the specifications for an 8-centimeter Blu-ray drive.

Yep. Looks like BD support is pretty much a lock for JP. Not bad since that's where all the CE comps live.

It is 1920 X 1080I. True consumer 1080P/24 camcorders might be 2 years away.

Although I think camcorders recording HD to flash memory will be strong as well, I think these Blu-ray models are important and provide immediate satisfaction (no PC required).

This is part of some strong synergies for Blu-ray adoption - Players -> camcorders -> player-recorders -> desktop & notebook Blu-ray -> media servers & Blu-ray multi-disc-players, etc. etc.

when it comes to video cams, stick with Sony. They don't make a BD camcorder yet, but the HDR-SR11 and SR12 are my favorite consumer choices right now. PMW-EX1 for semi pro, and XDCAM HD 50mb/s 4:2:2 next up from that, then HDCAM SR 4:4:4 right at the top.

Yeah I am going to pick up the SR11 in a couple months. I am going to wait for the price to come down just a smidge and then good to go.

IMO, Sony FX7 is a very good prosumer camera and expected to hold value until the next generation appears. This will be in the range $2500 to $3000.

My buddy uses this camcorder, the Sony HDR-FX1 to shoot skiing and other sporting events. It is 1100 dollars at http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prod...?prodid=194135 which is better than the 2500 he paid last winter.

Yes, this is a very good camera. Built like a tank.
