Two guests that I met when I was in Ireland were a couple from the UK, John and Marie. I got to know them well enough. They were in town to celebrate Marie's father's 79th birthday. Of course I shared my story with them and let them know that it's true, Americans can't drive in Ireland
John invited me out with him and Larry a couple times. We went to this antique shop in Portlaoise one day and then another day we went to a boot sale (flea market, boot is what Brits and Irish call their car trunks). Had a good time both days and Larry was quite a character. Buuuut, they never told me this story here

Great story.I agree,Larry is quite the character although I don't share his sentiments with Hitler.
I was in Auschwitz some years ago and it is mind blowing, standing exactly where so much death and destruction occurrd is hard to comprehend.

Wow, you went there? Where are you from? I'm wondering if you're American and making all these European trips or if you're from Europe. I wanted to go to Auschwitz when I went to Germany and Austria back in 2015 but it was a little too far into Poland. I went to Dachau instead and that was quite an experience.

No I don't share his sentiments at all. I can see how some people might like the uniforms. The all black tops and trousers or the hats. I can see how he might respect their discipline but I can only hope he didn't sympathize with them. He was an older guy so he could have been a little wonky. He did tell us this funny joke though. I thought it was humorous anyway. I can't remember it exactly but it was something like
A guy stops and asks an old farmer what's the best way to get to Cork. The farmer asks him if he's driving or walking. The guy answers that he's driving. The farmer looks at him and says, "well that's the best way to get there"

Oh because I was thinking at first (like when I saw your picture) that you were American. No wonder you can travel so easily back there. If things hadn't gone south for me, I might have gone to the UK this year.

Speaking of Dachau (town), that was the one place where my fears were realized. I mentioned how I was afraid of driving in Germany and having all of the signs be in German or contain pictures/symbols that we didn't have in the States. I told my mom, "I'm going to get to a town and not know where I'm allowed to park so I'm just going to stay in the car and turn around and leave" lol
Well that did happen when I went to Dachau. I just plugged in...I believe it was "city centre" on the GPS and I found it but then I couldn't find a parking space so I just left and went to the camp. The reason I went there was for the camp but I would have walked around the town a bit had I found parking.

I thought the joke was pretty good and listening to this old timer tell it probably made it better. Speaking of old timers, I was in the hospital and there was this guy named Patrick who was a real hoot. He was in his 50's probably so he wasn't that old but anyway, he was soooo funny. His delivery, his accent and then just the stuff he said was cracking me up. An example might be this. I got to know this woman named Liz real well while I was there. She was in charge of feeding the patients and she took good care of me.
Patrick: I guess if you want special treatment around here, you have to have an American accent.
Liz: What's wrong Patrick? Did you want chips too?
Patrick: Well I don't know if there's any potatoes left on the whole island now.

haha I think that was one of the funny things he said. Like I said, he just cracked me up

Sorry I talk/type so much!!!!

And living in America makes it easier for you to see that part of the world.

Dachu would be an interesting trip too I'm sure, amazingly scary history in these places.

I take it you had travel insurance and it picked up the costs of your treatment?
You'd have had to stay and pick spuds for years to pay for it otherwise.

Oh it sure does. Right now it's like my next trip would have to be to the UK or Czech Republic but I had a feeling if I ever moved to Europe, my next vacation would be back to Colorado or something lol

Yes I went to Dachau and to the Memorial to the German Resistance which was in Berlin. They were the only two places where I didn't take pictures.

As for the hospital stay, I had a nice 10,500+ Euro bill waiting for me when I got home

Don't tell me how messed up I am but I never even started to pay it back. I didn't have travel insurance so I was SOL. My mom used to work in the billing department for a hospital and she told me how cheap that was. That included the ambulance ride and 11 days in the hospital. The only thing not in my favor was that the bill was in Euros so it would have been more in USD.

Kind of an off-the-wall question but have you ever heard of a movie forum (now closed) called theimportforums.com?
And I don't think I asked you but how was Belfast and did you see any of the murals?

Ha,I would say quite a few do that(not pay)interesting if you try and return to Ireland.

No I have never heard of that site, why?

Yeah seen the murals and peace wall, done a taxi tour and our guide was great, telling us how you had to go through security gates guarded by the army with machine guns just to enter the city centre to shop.

Such a divided city but at least has normality about it now and is thriving with tourism.

I certainly would like to pay them back someday but I just haven't got the funds right now.

I was just wondering because that's a movie site that I used to go to back in the day where 99% of the people from were Europe and I was just wondering if you had visited it.

As for Belfast, do you happen to know if your driver was Protestant or Catholic? I only know about the cab rides up there because of an Anthony Bourdain episode for No Reservations. I bought the episode from iTunes before I went on my trip. He went there and got a separate rides with a Catholic and a Protestant driver and obviously they took him to the respective murals.
I remember watching a show on the History Channel about N.I. They must have had a camera mounted in or on some moving vehicle and I was really surprised to see these murals on the sides of buildings with guys in fatigues and balaclavas holding AK-47s. This was my first time ever seeing the murals and I was really surprised to see them.

Have you read a book from English comedian Tony Hawks called Round Ireland With A Fridge?

He was Catholic, the black cabs jobs are mainly Catholic although he did show both sides,I still think he sided with the Nationalists.
I was interested in hearing about the shocking murders of corporals Howe and Woods(TV footage from years ago that always affected me)

He gave a different slant on it compared to some Protestants I was speaking to later that day but I guess that's Belfast for you.

A lot of the murals now have been replaced with political messages and even things like football(soccer)and the Titanic have taken up some of the walls.

No I haven't read that book,I'd rather watch a film than read a book.

Hey! Hmm, I don't think that I've heard of these corporals before. You mentioned the footage and that made me think of a couple videos that I found on YouTube about The Troubles. Have you seen many movies based on the conflict in Northern Ireland?
Did you find that all the Nationalists were friendly toward you? I would think that they would be but you never know.

You would rather watch the film that read the book? That is something I never thought I would hear a European say. I thought only us Americans said things like that

There is short footage about the killings on YouTube.

I haven't seen many movies about the troubles,71 and In the Name of the Father are the only but two I can think of.

I'd no problem with the Nationalists,I found everyone I spoke to very friendly although I was never stupid/brave enough to go for a pint in their area late at night.

My mum was the opposite, she had no use for a TV in the house, just another bit of furniture, she would have read all day but I can't be bothered with books, any spare time I see taken up with music or movies.

I will have to look for that footage on YT. Maybe I will see if there are any articles about it.

I do have both of those films as well as Michael Collins, Shadow Dancer, and 50 Dead Men Walking. There is another movie called A Belfast Story that I would have liked to have gotten on Blu Ray but I don't think that it even got a DVD release here. I'm not what kind of physical media release it got in the UK.

I know that I should know this but the Nationalists are the ones that want an independent N.I. right? Nationalists/Republicans and then the Unionists on the other side? And I was wondering this awhile back...probably because of sports like tennis. the Union Jack is the flag of Great Britain right? England has its own flag?

I went into this Irish pub in California today lol The owner was from Sligo but had lived in Ireland for a number of years. He knew the road, Swords Rd, where my B&B was and knew the pub (Comet Pub) that was right down the road. I saw Smithwicks mentioned on their board outside and popped into ask if it was from Kilkenny. Anyway, that's how I got to talking to the guy. It was pretty great to walk into an Irish pub here in the States and hear a real Irish accent

As for not reading much and preferring the telly...you sure you're not American? I'd like to read more than I do which is hardly ever but it's hard to compete with the internet. I could live on the internet lol I did read quite a bit when I was in Kilkenny though.

I had never heard of A Belfast Story,I just checked and it is available on DVD.

No.Not quite, the Nationalists/Republicans want a United Ireland while the Unionists/Loyalists want N.I. to remain part of the UK.

Yes you're right about the flags, the Union flag represents the UK,it is actually the three flags of England(St.Georges)Scotland(Saltire)and Ireland(St.Patrick) together that make it up.

Wales isn't included as when the flag was introduced,Wales was a principality of England.

I remember seeing the sign for Swords coming out of Dublin airport,I've only ever tried Smithwicks twice, first was a nice pint and then I bought a few cans and they were rough!

Irish pubs are everywhere and usually good spots to go to no matter where you are in the world.

Definitely not American,ha but certainly a couch potato,I have to wait on all these good books being made into a movie.

Are you going to get it on DVD? I have it downloaded but I have not watched it yet. I should probably get to it pretty soon. I actually first heard of it when I saw a trailer for it back at the B&B in Dublin.

Thank you for clarification on the flags. The only reason I even suspected that England might have its own flag is because of soccer (football) apparel hehe

Yeah the B&B was not too far from the airport which made it so easy when I got the rental car on the first day. I took a left turn out of the lot and just drove straight like 2 kilometers and then I was at the B&B. I was actually going to go North to Carlingford that first day (that I had the car) but it had started to sprinkle and I was a little nervous about driving for the first time so I just parked it and took the bus back into the city centre haha Have you been to Carlingford? It looks to be quite close to the border.

Since this has kind of become the UK/Ireland/N.I. thread, I'll just share these pics. Nothing special but I am happy that every year about this time, you'll see at least two or three Ireland calendars appear in Barnes & Noble. Normally they're recycled but I have never seen the first one before.
[Show spoiler]

The reviews ain't good for it on IMDb.....I'll wait on you your feedback before purchasing.

Yes I have been to Carlingford,it's nice,I have also been to Galway,Westport and somewhere in Donegal some years ago, forget the name of the place.
Yes Carlingford is near the border, although the checkpoints now gone, just the road markings and speed signs let you know you have crossed it.

Well I am quite easily entertained so I'll probably like it

Carlingford sure looked nice in the pics. I don't know if you are that into traveling but if you are, you can check out the boards at TripAdvisor and Fodors.com. They both have a forums there and I have used them a bit while planning my trips. I was just thinking that you could always add your $.02 when people are asking questions. You may not have questions yourself, but you may have answers.
My stops in Ireland were
Dublin - 3 nights
Powerscourt Estate
Roundwood where I had my first real pub experience at The Coachhouse. I got bangers and mash and had the sticky toffee pavlova for dessert. This is where my nightmare became reality when I had to pay for a second diet Coke. I could never do without free refills on soda lol
Graiguenamanagh - 2 nights
Glendalough
Kilkenny
Inistioge
About a half hour or so after I left Inistioge and as I was headed to Rock of Cashel, baaaaaaam, I got smacked!
11 days in hospital followed by 47 days recovering in Kilkenny.
Did lots of walking while I was there which was a lot of fun. I did go to Portlaoise while I was there which was nice.
And that was about it. But it was a blast!

Thanks,I will check those forums out.

I do like Dublin, always a good spot for a night out.

I have only heard of Kilkenny from the places you mentioned but there is so much I'd like to see including Dalky(where Bono lives) and Cork, kiss the Blarney Stone and all that.

"I did go to Portlaoise while there"
The prison?was that because of your driving?
