Default Ebay "Deals" Are they Legit?

I've been noticing brand new box sets for sale on ebay for much cheaper than Amazon. Two examples are the Star Wars Saga for only $28.98 and the MASH Series for $55.99. Is it trustworthy to buy new movies off ebay or are they most likely bootlegs? Something tells me it's too good to be true given the price differences.

Look at the seller's feedback and also how long the seller has been an Ebay seller. I'd not hesitate to buy from the two sellers in your example.

Those are both fakes.

Rule of thumb: if the price is too good on Ebay, there's a reason for it.

Usually if the deal is too good to be true it's probably a fake, but a few months ago I got the Mad Men complete collection in bluray new for $40. I haven't gotten around to watching the discs yet, but it came with a working digital copy and everything the set is supposed to have.

There are a lot more bootleg complete sets floating around eBay these days. Virtually every television DVD set from anyone but the "big" retailers on eBay is now a bootleg. Much the same goes for expensive CD sets.

If any feedback mentions a bootleg set, I avoid that seller.

One big reason it is certainly possible to find media prices much lower on eBay than on Amazon (even for new items): Amazon's seller restrictions on media. Amazon makes third party sellers go through a convoluted application process before letting them sell a lot of DVDs and other media. Some applications are approved but plenty are not, and thus a lot of people turn to eBay. Consequently, many prices rise on Amazon and go down on eBay.

I've pretty much so stopped buying DVDs on Ebay. The last two sets I ordered ages ago were bootlegs. A few months ago, I ended up getting an order that I didn't place but sent to me in error. I wasn't sure what the package was, but opened it to find 2 seasons of some show called Salem. I didn't open them, but the covers were some of the worst looking inkjet print jobs I've ever seen.

I rarely rarely buy DVDs at all, and I certainly wouldn't get them from ebay. Blu-rays are harder to bootleg, so those are a bit safer to get there. Nothing beats the mispriced $6 copy of the Friday the 13th Blu-ray collection I got a while back... great deal, was not a bootleg, and arrived in perfect shape from a drop shipper

The MASH set I don't know about, but 8 buyers in the last 6 months who did both to leave feedback mentioned the sellers sending bootlegs which likely means 10-20x that number didn't bother to report the same thing

Honestly -- my opinion is any non-Retail seller (BlowitoutofHere, Deep Discount, etc) that is selling 30+ copies and is listing with a generic picture at a 40-50% discount is guilty until proven innocent. Ebay buyer feedback is almost worthless since almost none of the buyers either care if it's a bootleg or could tell the difference
I can't vouch for any DVDs but the blu rays I purchased from Blowitouttahere is legit. When Blu rays are considered, the easiest way to check is to see if the reflective surface is mirrored (legit) or if it is a dark surface (burnt rather than pressed indicating bootleg version).
