Everything comes full circle. Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is definitely a loose end if you don’t watch the next film, but I can live with that. Maybe I’ll just watch the fight he has with Rey on the ocean and the subsequent scene with “not Force Ghost Han Solo” and call it a day. He never speaks another line of dialogue after that scene anyway.

It’s funny because at the time I remember people complained that Rian’s film felt more like an ending than a middle chapter with no good story hooks. Maybe that was for the best. I certainly would prefer to forget that the Emperor’s reanimated corpse is hanging from a crane while this film was happening. Why was Snoke trying to kill Rey again in The Last Jedi? That was just a Palpatine surrogate that was grown in a pickle jar, right? And Palpatine needed Rey to come find him hanging from his crane on Excrement so he could die a second time, right? Nah, I’m just gonna pretend Rey doesn’t have a zombie grandfather out there somewhere and keep loving The Last Jedi.
That's my feelings too- it works pretty dang well as an ending. There's plenty of hope, but juuuust enough of a dangle of loose ends to see where it could potentially go. Yes, Kylo and the First Order is still out there, but Rey finally accepting her destiny and powers, as well as the actions of Rose and Finn awakening pockets of/future Resistance fighters, and Poe stepping up to become a more responsible leader, means that they have the hope they've been lacking all this time. Even if it's open-ended, that to me is better than Craney McGee and the Granddaughter Conspiracy. The Last Jedi was, and remains, a cinematically gorgeous, emotionally charged gem, and I will die on that hill.

The Hobbit was def bad but it wasn't insulting.

That's a very interesting post. Personally I haven't seen how TLJ for a couple of years, so I'll be interested to see how it plays in the light of TROS. My guess is that TLJ opened a ton of potential doors and Abrams and Terrio chose instead to go through none of them, instead choosing to set the clock back decades. The 'see you around, kid' line is a setup for a payoff that never came, nor is the hint that the Force is manifesting itself in a new generation.
