Post My 3D TV Just Died.

Well, I suppose it was inevitable but my precious Samsung 65 inch 3D compatible TV with curved screen has finally bit the dust. Luckily I paid for the extended warranty on it and the Geek Squad came out today to try to resuscitate it... to no avail. Final word: can't be fixed and has to be replaced.

But as I feared, no more Samsung 3D model TV's are available anymore. (Seriously, fork you Samsung) Best Buy has agreed to replace it with a 65 inch Q7 Series QLED TV, which I'm excited about... but GODDAMMIT ALL TO HELL, I'm going to miss 3D.

For a great many films my collection, 3D was my preferred choice for viewing and I'm bummed at not being able to watch them anymore in that format. Just a short quick list of some titles I'm already grieving the loss of: Cue "Taps"...

ANT-MAN
AVATAR
AVENGERS
BEAUTY & THE BEAST (Disney Animated)
BOLT
EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
GHOST IN THE SHELL
GRAVITY
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 1 & 2
HUGO
JUNGLE BOOK (Disney Live Action)
JURASSIC PARK
JURASSIC WORLD
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
THE MARTIAN
TANGLED
TITANIC

And a slew of others. Seriously, this is truly a QUANTUM DICK PUNCH for me. It feels like a family member has died.

Adding insult to injury, amazon UK just shipped my BLACK PANTHER 3D and I have to cancel my READY PLAYER ONE 3D pre-order. I REALLY REALLY wanted to watch those. (Insert expletive here)

Any other lovers of the 3D format out there that also had to suffer the devastating loss of their apparatus? Looking to commiserate with some fellow 3D philes if there are any left.

Grieving

I'm really sorry to hear this! I understand your pain, as this scenario scares me to death. But, if you can find a place to use a projector for your 3D viewing, you'll be glad you did. I have an OLED, but recently got an Epson 3700 projector, and I absolutely love it. It is BRIGHT, and the 3D is fantastic. I was very surprised, and now have been watching most of my 3D movies on the projector instead of the OLED. This projector was less than $1000, and I got it mainly to play video games on. I didn't realize how good it was going to be, and now use it constantly. I wouldn't give up on my 3D collection if there was a way to make it work, you might be surprised

Write to Samsung and complain- if you really want to make an impression, don't even accept a replacement TV that can't do 3D.

My deepest condolences!

Hold onto your collection. I feel certain 3D functionality will eventually be reintroduced. It could be 5 years, it could be 10 years, but sooner or later they'll realise they've made tvs as bright as possible and as thin as possible and as big as possible, 8k, 16k, UHDR; there's only so much more they can do, and there's a market right there that any of them could have a monopoly on. Maybe it'll be reintroduced with great fanfare and technical innovation, maybe it'll be quietly added to select few high-end models. In the meantime it might be fun to explore projectors and VR.

One thing I heard in the immediate wake of Samsung dropping 3D, was that their sets still had all the hardware necessary to do active 3D. One person commented that they had been able to install old firmware on a post-3D Samsung tv, and they were able to access the 3D menu, and everything worked. Infuriating. Although they've probably moved on too much since then to go back to old firmware at this point.

Register your anger and disappointment with Samsung. Make sure they know how you feel.

Go ahead and cry (totally understandable).... Now adapt. This gives you a chance to go bigger!!! I rock a epson 5030ub with a 100" screen and it's insane!!! Heavily consider going with a projector. You won't be disappointed....

Hi planet

Very sorry to hear. Know that your warranty would only provide a replacement do if you wanted to continue enjoying your 3D collection, it would mean having to buy a second, older set on line as well.

Do not know if you would be interested in a makeshift solution but you might have read about a device I am very happy with, the 3D Video Wizard. Though discontinued, it does pop up on eBay or Amazon.

It is an an anaglyph device that will allow you to watch your 3D Blu-ray collection on a 2D set, not simulating the picture but actually playing it back the way it appears on the disc.

Now will admit it took me quite a while to make the proper adjustments to get a 3D picture that I will say comes very close to reproducing the depth one sees on a standard 3D monitor, along with the proper color, etc. I actually use the vivid mode for it, with contrast, etc reduced. Objects that are supposed to be just slightly in front of the screen are indeed there, however, it will not provide the big pop out effect one is used to.

In addition, if a disc has crosstalk, rather than the clear, see through outline, one will see a yellowish see through outline instead. No larger or smaller.

Out of the box with some minor tweaks it will give a fair enough 3D picture but with shimmering and anaglyph distortion. But with proper adjustments it really does give a satisfying picture for what was before only a 2D set.

While it might not be the ideal solution, it will provide an overall nice 3D picture understanding it is an add on device. One should not pay more than $50 for this which comes with two pairs of glasses. Additional can be found on Amazon.

This is only a suggestion. I am very pleased with it as my second unit but like the rest of us, would want a real 3D monitor as my main unit. But you might want to consider it rather than being without 3D altogether.

It got mixed reviews on Amazon. Some trashed it while others, like me, really liked it. Wouldn't recommend it if it was mostly junk.

There’s still one 4K UHD tv model with 3D (active) available in the market, Sony Z9D. The 65 inches is about the same price as the Samsung Q7. You still have time to go after it.

Are you a gamer? You could always buy a PSVR headset if you have a PS4. You would have to watch your films alone but it is an option if you can’t afford a more expensive projector.
Even if you aren’t a gamer you pick up a PS4, a VR headset and enjoy all your films in 3D for less money than a good 3D projector.

The 3D depth is very good (not as great as a top projector or OLED tv but still very good. The pop out is outstanding however, with the large screen making those flinch moments even more immersive.

buy a projector. you can build a great rig for less than $1300.00. take your time setting it up. you'll never watch a movie on a tv again. if your room is less than 11ft deep buy a 3d gaming pj.

You are indeed a very caring soul. Some of us believe 3d is the future as well.

Hi wild Bill,

Thanks my friend for expressing what I think we all felt when reading that.

It's a shame there are insensitive individuals like that just looking to hurt the feelings of others.

Planet, please know Wild Bill does speak for all of us. And we all hope you find a solution that keeps you in the family!

This is sad to read. I'm surprised my BenQ 3D Projector is still going. Especially with the 3D content I'm running through it now. It was manufactured in 2013. The DMD chip is still going. No dots yet! I also have PS4 and PSVR.

There are some 3D TVs available if you willing to go used. Get one while you can. BHPhoto has 3 65 inchers right listed in their used dept. Affordable too. Nothing wrong with used as long as their are no pixels out. Try to get a qualified Samsung tech to look at it as the Bestbuy guys just might not want to deal with it if its not an easy fix, Most parts should be available including the LED strips.

Hey, thanks to all of you who replied!... Even the 4K douchebag. I like 4K too but I'll take my 3D HUGO, JURASSIC WORLD or AVATAR over any 4K equivalent ANY DAY.

Thanks also for the very helpful advice. My budget is severely limited at the moment so I will grin and bear it with the new QLED. (I know, poor me!) Hopefully I will not mourn too long. At some point, budget allowing, I will reinvest in some form of 3D whether it be projection or refurbished TV. And I will definitely hold onto my 3D collection. I love it too much to just drop it and move on.

Thanks again to all of you who replied. Keep the faith! 3D rocks.

Hi planet,

This is not to push. But two of those 3D Video Wizards popped up on eBay. They are used and the shipping costs make them go for about $70 which is kind of high. But a make shift system to still enjoy your collection, while anaglyph might ease the time before plunging into another set.

There are other devices out there for you to look at too.

Best of luck with whatever you feel is best for you.

Bear in mind PSVR has dropped to £199. You can get a PS4 for roughly the same price.

Obviously, the VR screen will be huge.
