"Sources tell Variety that Aaron Sorkin is on board to direct with Sacha Baron Cohen in early talks to join the cast.

Sorkin penned the original script. At one point, Spielberg himself considered directing, but a writers strike forced him to delay the film. Spielberg tried revving up the project in 2013, attaching Paul Greengrass to direct, but after a budget couldn’t be agreed on, Greengrass parted ways with the film and it was shelved again.

The film is based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more, arising from the countercultural protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government." [SOURCE]

Sorkin is not the draw for me that he seems to be for everyone else, but the subject matter sure is. Will be interested in seeing if Harlan Ellison turns up in this; supposedly he was the 'ninth' member of the seven, with him and another writer told to stay out of things so they could be free to write about it. I've never seen any outside corroboration, but also can't imagine him lying about that or any other important matter.

Says at the end that they're gonna try to re-develop it, so not completely dead yet. Especially for a movie that's been on-and-off since 2008.

Shooting starts in the summer. Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen are still onboard as Tom Hayden and Abbie Hoffman, respectively, and they’re joined by Seth Rogen as Jerry Rubin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Richard Schultz, Jonathan Majors as Bobby Seale and Al Sharp as Rennie Davis. Michael Keaton is being pursued for the role of William Kunstler.
