Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) - November 11, 2021

Someone get Ivan Reitman on the phone, because there may be a new film for him to direct! Fans of the 1984 classic, Ghostbusters, and its 1989 follow-up, aptly titled Ghostbusters II, have been awaiting a third installment of the franchise for nearly 30 years.

The main cast, which featured Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and the late Harold Ramis, have been fielding the same question for three decades and Dan Aykroyd has finally given us an answer we've longed to hear...

In a recent episode of AXS TV’s The Big Interview with Dan Rather, Aykroyd teased fans with the news that a new Ghostbusters is "being written right now."

He mentions there is a "possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters", which would include himself, Murray, and Hudson. When asked about Bill Murray specifically, he adds, "I think Billy will come. The story's so good. Even if he plays a ghost."

While there's no guarantee this film will ever come to fruition, fans are grasping at any morsel of hope Aykroyd is willing to share.

The legendary actor didn't mention any details, but it's safe to assume the potential new film won't have any connection to Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot from 2016. Aside from the fact that the reboot was met with harsh criticism, the original cast cameoed as completely different charactersl, so it's safe to say the films are set in different universes.

There is also the question of how to handle the passing of Harold Ramis, who is not only a staple in the originals films, but one of the co-writers. In fact, the third film almost happened years ago, but was halted when Ramis got sick. The question remains, if they choose to kill off his character, Dr. Egon Spengler, they'd have to account for why he's not a appearing as a ghost.

Another big question is that of Rick Moranis, who took a long hiatus from acting after his wife passed in the '90s. He declined to make a cameo in Ghostbusters (2016), but was seen onscreen for the first time in over a decade when he reprised his role of Dark Helmet from Spaceballs on The Goldbergs earlier this year.

While it may be too soon to whip out the ol' proton pack, feel free to bask in the glimmer of hope that is Ghostbusters 3.

As long as a restraining order is put on Paul Feig to stay as far away from this project as humanly possible, then I'm all for this.

Yes, but I wouldn't mind a good Ghostbusters 3 movie which would be a good 'Ghostbusters 4' so to speak.

Yeah, just a bit. I think Ghostbusters 3 must have been written about 20 times now! They scrap each one, then start again. Even if this does happen, which I think is incredibly unlikely, it’s gonna be pretty confusing for the average moviegoer after the reboot.

We got Evil Dead 4 in Ash Vs Evil Dead the TV Series and Bill and Ted 3 starts filming next year.

As long as it isn't that Fiegbusters crap yay.

The women were not the problem for 2016 Ghostbusters IMO.

It was the writing, the directing, and the casting.

The comedy writing was hit and miss, the latter being the more prominent. I felt like I was watching a Kindergarten Cop deleted scene where they got 4 kids to stand in front of the class and tell jokes. It was abysmal. That is not the fault of the gender of the main characters or the actresses involved, they did what they could with the mess in front of them.

The directing was poor. Watching most scenes felt like Paul Feig had a movie set and threw a cast in there and said "there's no script, just improvise and we'll cut it all together in post". I've watched cutscenes of video games stitched together as a 'movie' that have been more coherent.

Then there's the casting. Some members of the original cast returned, but as totally different characters (which is ridiculous IMO, but considering how crap the movie was, it was probably for the best that they were different characters). Rick Moranis must have the power of foresight, because he turned it down. I don't blame him. What an awful movie to potentially revive his acting career from. He's holding out for better, and so am I, dammit!

THIS! Theatrical cut is fine to meh, but the extended cut is even worse.

For an explanation about Egon not being a ghost. I can see it as Ghostbusters was what he was meant to do in life. So he has no unfinished business that he would have to stick around for.

In story? Yes. In production value? Hell no.

It makes a HUGE difference when you have the actors all together recording scenes. It was PAINFULLY obvious in the video game that each actor was recording their dialogue alone without any reference to the other performances in the scene... no reference beyond the words on the page anyhow. The inflections were atrociously mismatched and conversations between characters sounded disastrously amateurish.

As fun as that video game was to play, even a poorly crafted Ghostbusters 3 film without Egon Spengler in it would be a much better sequel than said video game.
