Screen International: "Chloe Zhao's poetic film has real significance in the era of Covid-19 and the army of low-wage workers it will displace and perhaps kill, in one way or another. But there's more to it than that."

Oh god, I wish reviews would pack it in with relating everything to the Pandemic. The film was shot over a year ago.

Other raves:
IndieWire: "The director of "The Rider" delivers a powerful character study about one woman's desire to resist settling down." The Playlist: "Chloé Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’ Is As Vast As The American Landscape It Travels" Peter Howell: "Bound for glory. Chloé Zhao dramatizes Jessica Bruder's urgent reportage about rootless Americans for an awards season stunner. Frances McDormand's wanderer Fern balances grief and resiliency. A role and story drawn from life, it feels like classic fiction." Entertainment Weekly: "Exquisitely directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Frances McDormand, 'Nomadland' is one of the year's very best films." Last edited by Cremildo; 09-11-2020 at 11:27 PM. |

I heard these same raves for Marriage Story last year after the festivals, and it didn't go far in the race, only a controversial Supporting win and no Screenplay win or Directing nom.

Even if this film turns out to be good, I know one thing for certain... that's the most pretentious trailer I've ever seen.

For $25, the film can be rented as part of NY’s Film Festival virtual screening series on 9/26. I’ll be doing it. |

5/5. Best film of the year.
Chloe Zhao is just brilliant. I wish I could put into full words what I feel about this film but it’s a film that’s causing me to want to reflect on so much that will ultimately give away the films intentions. It’s stunningly beautiful in its raw, poetic nature. It lays everything out on the table bare for the viewer. It’s painful, it’s honest. Chloe using real life nomad’s who get to tell their stories instead of actors elevates it in every way. Linda May and Swankie, two female nomads whom Fern becomes oh so close with on this journey, deliver two stories that will crack your soul in half. Listening to each person tell how they felt like the world around them left them behind, trying to find purpose in their new life, it’s heartbreaking. Fern lives her life suffering from trauma and grief. She, like the others, feels completely abandoned and unworthy in this life. Frances Macdormand is absolutely extraordinary here. Given how slow and dead this years Oscar race is, she should lock her third up handily with her realistic, subtle portrayal. She overtakes you so effortlessly that by the end, you feel every little thing she does. Quote:
See the film, then make your assumptions. |

Indiewire actually did a good breakdown of the completely vapid nature of the term when they reviewed Utopia earlier this week, that sort of managed to put into words my utter frustration of it’s overuse currently. https://www.indiewire.com/2020/09/ut...nn-1234588742/ |

Seeing this at an LFF screening today must have been one of the greatest experiences of my life!
In my book, it eats every Golden Lion Winner in the last 3 decades or so combined for lunch. To me the most recent Golden Lion winning film anywhere comparable to it's greatness is Hou Hsiao-hsien's City of Sadness, from 1989. Truly a film to remind us of the sheer power cinema can have as a medium. This one's for the ages... Sure hope so! Will further make the point of last year's historic win for Parasite not being a fluke, and that the Academy is starting to be serious about becoming relevant again. Would have agreed before seeing Nomadland. But now I feel that if there is any mainstream Hollywood actress working today who deserves a triple Best Actress win, it's Frances McDormand, and I can't wait to see what she does with Lady Macbeth alongside Denzel Washington in Joel Coen's upcoming Macbeth adaptation. Film at Lincoln Center is doing a one-week virtual run of this movie from December 4th through the 10th. Tickets are very limited. I saw it a while back and thought it was excellent, highly recommend it.

I looked at the cast for Nomadland and it looks like she's going to explore that area again? Since one of the guys in both those films is in Nomadland as well. My theatre says they're getting this next Friday so I'll try to see it then. |
