Welcome to the current state of film making. Itís either a super hero movie or a reboot of something that no one is asking for. And Chris Rock? REALLY?

Ummm. Yeah. Ok then. Yíall enjoy.

Default New SAW Film Announced for 10/23/20 w/ Story Conceived by Chris Rock

SAW Franchise Returning with Film Conceived by Chris Rock
by Clark Collis
May 16, 2019

Last year, funnyman Danny McBride helped revitalize a once hugely successful horror franchise by co-writing the script for David Gordon Green’s Halloween. Can stand-up legend Chris Rock do the same for the SAW series?

Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures announced Thursday that they have partnered with Rock to spin off and expand the world of the SAW franchise, with a new film to be released Oct. 23, 2020.

I’ve been a fan of SAW since the first film in 2004,” Rock said in a statement. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.

The new film will be produced by longtime SAW producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed three SAW sequels.

The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Rock and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who directed and wrote the original 2004 movie, will serve as executive producers alongside SAW veteran Daniel Heffner.

Rock’s own behind-the-camera credits include writing and directing the 2014 comedy Top Five.

When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all in,” said Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, in a statement.

He added, “This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous SAW films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision, and passion for this classic horror franchise.

Chris wants to put his own spin on the SAW franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours,” Burg and Koules said, while also pledging that the new SAW would have “all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect.

I've read the article and it sounds more like a spinoff of the franchise instead of a full fledged reboot.
It'll be interesting, as a fan of the franchise, to see what Rock can bring to the table and hopefully take it somewhere and it's nice to know Bousman is returning and the original creators will be involved.

Bousman knows what he is doing. Having co-wrote and directed Saw 2-4.

Even if they're going for a full reboot, they should really keep Bell.

‘Saw’ Reimagining Gearing Up to Shoot Next Week!:
Quote:
It’s all happening so fast, but the next installment in the SAW franchise is gearing up to shoot next week with director Darren Lynn Bousman teasing the “reimagining” on Twitter:

"Start shooting the new Saw film in just a few days. Something I never thought I be typing again! Gotta be honest. No one is ready for the insanity about to bleed out on screen!"

Bousman, of course, took the reigns from creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who have since produced all sequels alongside Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures, and directed SAW II-IV. They have all partnered with award-winning actor, director, and stand up comedian Chris Rock to spin-off and expand the world surrounding the hit billion dollar franchise.

As Bloody Disgusting exclusively told you last year, the screenplay was written by Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, although we didn’t know it was – and I kid you not – based on a story conceived by Chris Rock, who will also star.

There’s still no word on if we’ll see Tobin Bell‘s Jigsaw in this new installment, which will be released on October 23, 2020.

I found Jigsaw to be utterly pointless, not to mention annoying because I already bought the complete boxset!

From Josh Stolberg (writer of Jigsaw and announced as the writer for the new film)

Quote:
I can say with pretty much certainly that our new film will NOT be called Jigsaw 2. But I don't make the decisions, so who knows. But it's NOT a sequel to Jigsaw. It's DEFINITELY in the timeline of ALL the films though.

There has been 8 Saw films, do we really need a reboot?

Seems that way. A full prequel with Tobin Bell sometime before 3 would be cool, he was always the strongest aspect of the sequels & I hoet they utilize him more.

According to the writer (few posts up) it's a new film in the canon, not a reboot in the traditional sense. As for more sequels, why not? There's 11 Halloween films, and some plot lines that haven't been wrapped up yet.
