Baywatch on dvd question.

Hi guys. I know that Baywatch has multiple releases on dvd internationally but I'm curious to determine which ones are the best. I know that the american releases are the worst ones, since they have misleading titles (Season 1 is Season 2), edits and music changes (not even the theme song) and finally they are not complete. The uk ones have the correct tiltes but are full with edits,music changes and only a few season sets. On the other hand the german ones are so far the best, with complete season and series sets and as far I can tell zero music changes, plus some bonus features. Then I found out about the australian ones. According to the back cover they are region free. They have complete season sets and the theme song. I dont know if they have any edits or music changes. Plus the Baywatch Hawaii seasons are out print. I don't own any of these releases and I'm curious to hear from people who have them. Amazon reviews are a mixed bag at best. Any info will be gratefully appreciated.

I have the Australian season 1 release. No edits or music replacements that I can tell except for the theme song which has been replaced. Season 1 on NBC had the "Save Me" theme song by Peter Cetera for the opening credits. It's been replaced on the Australian set by a song by Kim Karnes which I believe was used in syndicated markets overseas when the showed aired. As for the video quality, it pales in comparison to the newly remastered Baywatch.

you are talking about this one right? I didn't know about the theme song change. thanks. it looks like the german ones are the way to go.

Baywatch was recently remastered in HD. I know they have been released on the digital market. Not sure about dvd.

Yes that's the one I have. It's pretty much complete other than the different theme song. The German set has the international pilot episode which includes nudity.

only the pilot episode that I know of. Obviously the pilot that aired on NBC had no nudity but a few additional scenes with nudity were filmed for the international broadcast. Pretty sure that pilot is available on the German set.

I personally would wait for the new German blu-rays. They are going to include the original audio on the original SD masters as a bonus feature and may very well end up having the best compression. Shouldn't be much more expensive than the DVDs either.

despite that check out this review of the HD restoration. The are some really odd changes in this one.

Hmmmm interesting I never knew that. I will have to pick up the german set sometime when I get a region free player. Thanks for letting me know .

But as Fernsehjuwelen later told us, fortunately, the original versions including the original German & English soundtracks will at least be included as an SD bonus on the Blu-rays. So it will be possible for nostalgics to watch the original series as they know it. This is also a relief as we were also confirmed that these original versions "are no longer permitted to be aired on TV or VoD because of a limitation of the international rights holder."

Which is the best physical media release of spin-off Baywatch Nights? I know both seasons had an Australian DVD release (have got those). Not sure about Germany, but I know the spin-off hasn't had a UK release. Network's DVD releases of the original series in the UK got as far as the sixth season before they stalled again.

SD masters for the entire series? Would be ideal; I've sampled some of the remasters on Amazon Prime, and they're a cropping-fest (nice as they are otherwise), sacrificing many, err, "objects of interest" in the precious screen real estate on the vertical...which usually falls victim when 4 by 3 series are framed to 1.78:1. Having an archival copy of the original broadcast format would be a great way to salve the sunburn, so to speak.

I want to start my baywatch collection, but I want it to be as close as possible as my watching experience back in 1990.
Here is Australia we had the syndicated version of the show, with "I'll Be Ready" Theme song. Which DVD set should I buy for season 1 that will be least cut and have this all important theme song to me?

You want the German edition DVDs.

BUT the remastered Blu-rays from Germany are supposed to included the original uncut/uncropped versions as a bonus with the music so that is probably the best way to go as it is the best of both worlds. It is a shame that we will never get a true original Baywatch release due to all the rights issues.

why are the German DVD versions better than the NTSC Australian ones?
does anyone have a solid info on whether the Australian ones have the original music?
it seems crazy but can't find a single definitve claim on the entire internet
some say it does some day it doesn't, none give much evidence, some imply the initial Australian box set had it but the later individual seasons don't, some say they are the same, almost impossible to find photos of what was inside the initial box set that was complete, the one pic i found made it look sort of same as the inidvoduals

Is the Australia complete series box set featuring Baywatch Nights and Baywatch Hawaii still available anywhere? I can't seem to find it, and it seems that they've only released Baywatch seasons 1-9 separately as far as the Australia releases go.

It's my understanding that they have all of the original music except for the theme, though it may just be the first season that doesn't have the original theme.

I can't find that complete series Australian set anywhere, and it doesn't look like Baywatch Hawaii and Baywatch Nights have been given separate Australian releases. I feel like I was late to the party again.
