Animated films are not my cup of tea, but at least this one is original. Not that I have a problem with sequels per se, but Pixar made their name thanks to their originality. They had been focusing too much on sequels recently.

There's an easy fix for that: replace Chris Pratt with Jack Black & let him use as much offensive language as he wants. The character Pratt plays even looks like a creature version of Jack Black.

Yup, I'm not a fan of that particular Pixar character design style. I prefer the Toy Story / Inside Out / Coco look. The subject and themes are admittedly very well executed, but it's just that surface veneer that takes some penetrating IMO.

Just watch the trailer for Onward and imagine Jack Black's voice on Chris Pratt's character. Only then will you understand. He's good at those voices, ala School of Rock.

I hate it when that happens. I was working on something that was very, very similar to the premise of Yesterday, but that film's ballsed it right up for me. Same thing happened a few years ago with Dunkirk. A pain in my backside.

Yep. Albeit it's a serious semi-hard SF project set in the distant future of space colonization, and has more of a Interstellar vibe. Was a National Novel Writing Month challenge, so I do have 50K words put into it. Going through the rewrite phase to fill in some holes and fix major structural problems. With the way things are going, it might actually be finished by the time this movie comes out.

I know, right? It has happened to me quite a few times too. Biggest one for me lately was when the video game Detroit: Become Human came out--pretty much did everything I wanted to do with some short story serials, so I scrapped that idea.

Nice. At least this movie doesn't sound like a 1:1 copy of your idea, you have elements that I don't think this movie will have. Don't give up.

There's a plus side: I've been forced to devise ideas that are so bat-shit out there, there's no way anyone's going to accidentally arrive at a similar outcome.
