The Last of Us: Part II Spoiler Thread

Inspired by a friends post in the main Last of Us Part II thread, there's plenty of discussion to be had around the leaked spoilers and when the game releases. Usually i wouldn't have made this as we don't usually have this happen in the gaming section, but following a trend from the Movies section, i think we could use this one.

PLEASE try to keep it all respectful in debate and on the right side of Forum Rules. I don't want to be creating a headache for the Gaming Mods like Mavrick, Diesel etc. and i think we have a pretty good bunch of people here who could probably have a good debate around this all and it will let the main thread be left for the usual stuff.

If mods feel like the two should merge once Last of Us 2 releases, that's fine but i wasn't expecting posts to be spoiler tagged. So have at it i guess and hopefully we can discuss it here and leave the main thread for other stuff.

What's more to say than Abby kills Joel right out of the chute then you have to play as Abby to track down and supposedly kill Ellie? Those are the story points that people are upset with.

Yeah, I don't know how Naughty Dog are going to be able to continue TLOU after this unless they have a completely new set of characters.

I certainly wouldn't want a third entry where I have to play as Abby. I have a hunch that Abby really isn't going to have a personality that really connects to people, unlike Joel and Ellie. I might be totally wrong (I hope I am) and Abby might have a lot of character development throughout TLOU2, but I'm very skeptical at this point.

Are you able to post the summary of points of what happens? Also is Abby a new character or old (I can’t remember).

Abby is the daughter of the doctor Joel kills in the first game (when he saves Ellie from the surgery) she wasn’t in the old game

as for a summary, Abby wants revenge, she kills Joel and almost kills Ellie, you play mostly as Ellie, but some missions as Abby (you fight Ellie in a “boss fight” similar to the one Ellie had in the first game)

So as someone who hates the Star Wars ST due to many issues including a forced agenda vs. taking the time to write a compelling story and characters that fits with the existing canon, I am assuming there are other controversial parts of the story? I think killing Joel is actually a pretty dark, unexpected turn and if Ellie gets to stomp in this Abby’s face that cool. Playing as Abby seems odd though.

The most ‘controversial’ thing for me is killing Joel, TLoU was Joel and Ellie, and now Ellie is basically the new Joel and Dina is the new Ellie

btw If you've been paying attention to what Naughty Dog have been doing since 2013, killing Joel was not unexpected. Niel Druckmann’s “contribution” to the Uncharted 4 script was changing the gender of 3 minor characters and then bragged about it on interviews, so yeah, Joel didn’t have a chance. Nathan Drake barely did lol

Regarding the killing of dogs, I read that it is actually an option. This is especially for those that are dog-lovers or are sensitive to it. I, personally, am not.

Besides the killing of Joel and possibly Ellie, you play as Abby in the second half of the game. Basically, they're pulling an MGS2 on us - only Raiden smashes Snake's head in with a golf club.

I can honestly say that I'm not a supporter of the "politics" in the game. But it never stopped me from wanting to preorder. What really turned me off is that they used it as a driver to kill Joel, who's one of my favorite video game characters. Then as a slap in the face to us fans, we have to play as the character who kills Joel, then hunt Ellie. They really just crapped on the story to prove a point and I can't support that.

Yeah thinking about it more, I can see that for sure.

And does he really die like he is an extra getting his head knocked in with a baseball bat by a Negan knock off from the Walking Dead?

Whoops..clicked into the wrong TLOU2 thread. Now I know Joel is supposed to die. Oh well. I kind of expect it anyway. if people are up in arms about 'that' as part of the overall outrage that's been doing the rounds then, I don't know what to tell you.
