Had the idea of using wooden wall mounted magnetic knife blocks for steelbooks.

I had a similar idea a while back (using knife mag bars, as you mentioned) but the dust in my house is hard to keep on top of, so didn't follow through.
Mind, I did buy two bars for some of my kitchen knives.

One benefit to the magnets, you can swap out loved titles as the mood strikes you.

p.s. did you by chance cover the bare mags in silk or some other cloth, to alleviate the potential for scratching?
Should be pretty easy to do.
