Depends on the wattage for your power supply you currently have.

I'm running an older 1080 card. Might look into this (3080). I wonder if it will sell out on release day? Not sure how much demand there is.

I’m torn between the 3080 and 3090. If the 3080 had more VRAM, my choice would be much easier.

I am using a 2070 super but will be upgrading to the 3090 to help with 4k gaming.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 3090 geared more towards 8k gaming? I'm thinking it's super overkill for pretty much everyone who isn't into 8k gaming. Maybe even the 3080 is overkill for most. That 3070 is looking better and better all the time.

You only need a 3080 for 4k gaming at high frames. As seen in video below.

See no reason why those who aren't worried about having way over 4K60 need anything but the 3070. I guess just to be a little more future proof.

You guys act like future games won't be more graphic extensive even at lower resolutions... it's called "future proofing", even though I know that statement is kind of an oxy-moron when it comes to technology like this.

I'm not really trying to spent that much on a GPU, but if I were to wait and get a good deal on a prebuilt system with a better card then that would be the move.

That's why i am looking into the 3090 to future proof with new games but may end up with the 3080. I had two titan x a few years ago but like everything they got old when new games came out.

Future proofing is definitely a good idea if you're going to keep that card several years. I have an old 970 card in a home theater pc setup (1080 gaming) and that sucker still runs about 80% of my newer games reasonably well. If I go the 3080 over the 3070 it will be to keep it at least 3 years vs 2.

SLI Titans can't run newer games well? Are you talking just about ray tracing specifically?

I have been using the GTX 980 ti for 5 years, pricing and specs on the 3000 series seem impressive all around. The RTX 3080 is the right card to upgrade to and get years of use out of it.

I didn't expect this level of performance and at that pricing from Nvidia after the 2000 series.

I'm also still rocking a 980 ti and it has served me well, still can run Doom Eternal in 4k at a playable frame rate... but I'm ready to retire it.

RalphoR they could still run some games good at 4k but found newer titles to run rough. It seemed like sli was not supported well with new games and was having a rough time in games like bv5/swbf 2 multiplayer with some microstutter etc. plus fps was about the same with a single titan (maxwell) as with sli. I put in a 2070 super with a water block to hold me over till these new cards dropped and i am getting higher fps with it than i was with the two titan x's (m) with no stutter. Now i don't have to fear my gaming clan would kick me out lol.

I agree, it still performs really well. After so many years with it, I really got my money's worth out of this great card, it has held up really well.

Now I am eager to play games with Ray Tracing and DLSS, some features that feel that are mature enough to jump into the 30XX series.
