Report: Christopher Nolan Unlikely To Work With WB Again After HBO Max Announcement

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Christopher Nolan is “unlikely” to work with Warner Bros. in the future based in part on the decision by WarnerMedia to release films directly in theaters and HBO Max on the same day. It’s unclear how that might affect projects he currently has in development, but if true, it’s a massive blow to WB, who banks on Nolan films for their box office appeal.

I'd say Universal is the best bet. Maybe Paramount or Sony if either one of those studios consider Nolan his own tentpole brand worthy of the investment along their other franchises. Neither of those studios has much room anymore for failing IP, though, and Nolan would have to deliver something more along the lines of Inception than Tenet for it to pay off. Paramount did co-finance Interstellar, so they may have an in there.

Any and every one of them: he's still the most bankable director around and it's not as if studios hadn't tried to get him away from Warners before - indeed, Interstellar was originally a Paramount picture that they had been developing for years and were going to 100% until Warners bought their way in on less than favorable terms because they were so desperate to keep him in the fold (among other things giving them their remaining rights to the Friday the 13th franchise - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/he...er-bros-562879).

And even with Tenet bombing, it still pulled in $220m more than WW84 under current conditions. He won't be short of suitors and with his track record none of them would have any difficulty coming up with the money.

At this point, he can probably cobble together $150M+ in financing independently and/or through pre-sales. He'd only need distribution, which is extremely low risk and every single studio/distributor would try to snatch that up in a heartbeat.

With everything once again being delayed and shifting to the second half of the year I’m actually glad we have some guaranteed blockbusters to look forward to with this release plan - Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Conjuring 3, In the Heights - without any of these we probably wouldn’t have any new big movies until late summer/fall at the rate we’re going.

He's been paid already, so why does he care? Either they can do this and get money from subscriptions or wait and open it in theaters later where it might bomb because people aren't willing to go to the theaters yet. Plus, the movies are only on HBO Max for a month.

He has gone downhill and fast. Tenet was so boring...I tried to finish it and a couple of occasion but just could not do it.

Tenet was awful but the rest of his filmography is still gonna vouch for him.

Hopefully he gets back to his roots with something lower stakes like The Prestige. Not every story needs to involve some stupid world ending scenario.

Outside of Interstellar, which is post apocalyptic and Tenet, which is basically a Bond film Nolan style where a megalomaniacal villain hell bent on ending the world fits to a T, none of his films feature that kind of scenario.

And still make $363m, over $220m more than the next highest grossing US film released during the current unpleasantness. And lest we forget people both inside and outside the industry were begging Warners to release it to 'save the industry' and it was very much the canary down the coalmine. He's still the leper with the most fingers.

If he was really serious about this, he would have done a theater tour for Tenet. He should have sat with the fans and watched his movie.

If you are trying to suggest Nolan is a hypocrite who only wanted people to see his movie or wouldn’t do what he was asking of audiences, he made a point to go to theaters to see some other movies at that time. And he left millions of dollars on the table because he wanted Tenet out to support exhibitors who were open (as he doesn’t take an upfront fee and has it all tied into box office).

Yes, Tenet lost money, but when no post pandemic Hollywood films have done as well, hard to say it was a flop (given the extraordinary circumstances) or that Nolan isn’t a box office draw. I still think he and WB might come to an agreement after some time to think it over (and Nolan was far from the only A lister furious with WB, not just the decision itself but particularly announcing it without consulting talent who had contractual promises), but if not, he will find another studio.
