THE LONG SHIPS and BARRABAS coming from Imprint - Blu-ray Forum

Imprint of Australia has just announced upcoming BDs of THE LONG SHIPS and BARRABAS for June release, I believe.

I don't know if the films are being formally remastered, or not. I've read that previous international home video releases of those films have not been up to snuff. Here's hoping that Imprint will release superior versions.

Imprint doesn't do their own masters, so it'll be whatever already exists.

I watched Imprint's "Barabbas" release today. As is known, the transfer is an old master from I presume the 80s - in many scenes you can see a sort of raster from the ancient scanning technology used back then. However, the special features more than make up for it. Barry Forshaw and Kim Newman are fun as usual, the interview with Richard Fleischer gives a nice career overview, and the piece by Sheldon Hall is particularly great.

While watching the movie, I realized something about the soundtrack that apparently nobody else has pointed out - at least when skimming through the Barabbas reviews on the internet. Probably because most reviewers are likely WASPs or Jews and not Catholic and/or not familiar with the Catholic Latin mass, which has fallen out of use since the 1960s: One of the main themes of the movie (as heard e.g. in the last section of the soundtrack here: https://youtu.be/kQUH8dmaFBQ) borrows its melody from the Kyrie as well as the "Ite missa est" of mass no. XI, the line by which the priest dismisses the parish: https://youtu.be/OZ_MA-1Rv9c and https://youtu.be/CBmMqc4yZ9A Composer Mario Nascimbene certainly didn't do this by accident. Growing up in Milan in the 1910s and 1920s he must have heard this hundreds of times in church as a little Catholic boy. Just like the Italian audience of Dino de Laurentiis's film.

nascimbene is one of the greatest film composers of all time, terribly underrated, just because there are so many great italian composers

I like the movie, think the direction is spot on, and the acting is quite decent. The story of redemption is an interesting one, not everything works, but most of it does for me.

Ill probably have this, because of the extras you mentioned, even though I dont think its out of the question to hope for a 4k in the near future.
