1. The Kid Detective: It begins as a quirky comedy before slowly turning into a fairly dark murder mystery. I've never seen a movie slowly transition genres this smoothly, and the contrast between them makes their nuance all the more salient. Everything that seemed like the typical silly, Pushing Daisies (loved that show)-esque humor... Takes an entirely different tone. Not to spoil it too much, but, what feel like throwaway gags and silly lines in the beginning... Aren't. Not a single line is wasted. The Kid Detective manages an economy of film I can't recall having seen elsewhere, and I sat stunned over the final credits. Even then, I didn't appreciate it fully until subsequent viewings... Which I did throughout the week. 5 times - something I haven't done since I was a little kid. Adam Brody gives the performance of a lifetime, and this tale of someone who only believed he had matured against a backdrop of sycophants, enablers, and people who really felt they were doing the right thing... Well, there's no other film I've watched so many times since adulthood. 2. The Wolfwalkers also merited its 10/10, but, it's actually more difficult to talk about. The trailer does a good job setting its scene. The storytelling matches the animation, slowly weaving a world of the myriad colors within the art itself, a tapestry reflecting colliding worlds. Adolescent rebellion, Irish vs British settlers vs the original settlers, a father who just wants to protect his child, a mother completely powerless to protect her daughter from the tearing of worlds... Really hard to discuss without spoilers, but, if you like stories about independence and interdependence, or even if you just like a good story, this is a real treat. 3. Bonus round: Marona's Fantastic Tale (my only 2020 10/10). It wasn't specifically requested, so, I won't go on too much, but... I can say, I showed it to my friend and roommate, and it was their movie of 2020, too. "A dog recounts her life story as it draws to an end" sounds like a cliche; in truth, this is the film that merits sole claim to this set-up. From nascent optimism (even reflected into the art style, which also "matures" throughout the film), from times where everything is filled with excitement and wonder, and where every passing soul is a world in its own, to older days when wisdom and experience caution the heart but embolden the mind... This was actually the film that really set me on my blu-ray collection, just to find these preciously rare films that make me feel as I never have. |

L'emmerdeur aka. A Pain in the Ass
Very good French comedy - Jacques Brel brilliantly plays the titular character. |

I would recommend checking out Murder By Phone (AKA Bells). An underseen piece of canuxploitation goodness! Really needs a Blu-ray release. I actually really like Richard Chamberlain in it and a novel premise. Also has a scene where someone goes into literally shocking convulsions before being shot out of a window.

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (Living Dead at Manchester Morgue) was an entertaining, atmospheric horror film set in the remote countryside, far from the bustling city where the hero rides his motorcycle from, only to become stuck in a web of suspicion by the local police investigator (Arthur Kennedy I think), and the slow but powerful living dead from the local morgue that have mysteriously awakened after a manmade machine designed to kill insects with ultra sonic waves begins being used on local farmlands.
Entertaining 1970's film and hardly known by the mainstream. |

Sound of Horror is a 1966 Spanish production featuring a very young Ingrid Pitt and Soledad Miranda. It has yet to be released on blu-ray.

The 1951 film The Well directed by Leo C Popkin is relatively obscure but is a very well made film with small-town racio-political tensions interwoven with a rescue attempt. In a sense it is a smaller scale version of the real-life Thai Cave rescue from 2018 which is now made into movies, TV show and a documentary.
Another less known, undrrrated and yet very well shot film also from 1951 is Henry Hathaway's Fourteen Hours. |

Horror High has been released on blu-ray in a very nice transfer from Vinegar Syndrome. This is an entertaining low budget take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and worth seeing, especially for horror fans. It also has a great theme song.

Hi. Looking for pure action, natural movies like Jason Bourne, Ronin, without tons of special effects, boring dialogues, scenes. Any advice? Thanks. Can't post and create new thread.
