i think the sandman retcon is my main issue with it, but it's also been forever since i've seen it

er, i guess i was also not into harry's goblin, but franco in general was pretty fun and hammy iirc

Exactly this. If you can let go of what you think Venom "should" be and just accept him for what he is here, and if you're into Sam Raimi's brand of totally goofball humour (like any Army of Darkness fan should be)....Spider-Man 3 is actually really really fun.
