Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz ended up being perfect.
Chris Pratt is getting a lot of crap for Mario (and based on the trailer, deservedly IMO). Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. Maybe it's just me but a lot of these recent castings just have no rhyme or reason to them. Do a-list names like Pratt and Reynolds draw and sell tickets for you to watch it? I'll go see Mario just because video game nostalgia. But I can't say I'm excited to hear Chris Pratt's voice for 2 hours. |

It has been done several dozen times already:
Orson Welles and Leonard Nimoy in Transformers: The Movie. Mel Gibson voiced John Smith in Walt Disney’s Pocahontas. The cast of Anastasia (1997). The cast of Ferngully. David Spade, John Goodman, Earth Kitt, and Patrick Warburton in The Emperor’s New Groove. Woody Allen in Antz. The cast of The Road to El Dorado. Animated movies are also rarely two hours and no character monologues that long so you aren’t listening to them for “2 hours.” |

It's not like it's anything new. Disney's been doing it for decades (ie Bob Newhart in The Rescuers, Kurt Russell & Mickey Rooney in The Fox & The Hound), though it probably didn't become really prominent until Robin Williams did Aladdin. The floodgates for A-listers doing animation really opened after the success of that movie.
Remember when Dreamworks animation started & they tried to top Pixar by just jamming as many famous names into the cast as possible, no matter how unsuitable most of them were for the roles? (as opposed to Pixar who would pick the right actors for the roles) That fish movie they did was painful to watch. ![]() At the end of the day, I don't really care who's doing to voice work as long as they fit the character, perform it well & don't take me out of the movie with me thinking 'Hey, that's Deadpool!' ![]() |
