Missed it when it was in limited theaters. But I'd like to see this when it comes to blu.

I'm a little annoyed - the US Blu-ray is 5.1 DTS whereas the UK edition is in Dolby Atmos - ugh - really, really ?!?

Thanks for that. Was bummed the US was not in Atmos but didn't even think to check other regions. Amazon UK has it as "Region Free" so will hold for review but looks like it will work in US players.

Did Universal or WB cancel the 4k release? The UK listing is gone and only the blu ray is up.

Sad. Unfortunately--at least at this moment--that appears to be the case. Back in September, I specifically asked Mr. Morgen (after a screening) about a 4K BD release and he said it was indeed happening. Very frustrating given how arresting this was in IMAX theatrically.

I loved Moonage Daydream when I saw it at an IMAX theater.

I'm going to hang back until the 4K comes out, though, either import or on these shores.

Decal's releasing Crimes of the Future's UHD in January so probably yes

Just watched the BD, and thought it was fantastic. Real shame there's no UHD, it would look great in HDR and I bet the Atmos track is pretty amazing. The BD release feels very half-assed and this movie deserves better.

Just confirming: does this BD have Spanish subtitles? Back of the box says no but the specs on the review page say yes. Which one is true?

Saw it yesterday. I don't see how the image would benefit in 4k. It's mostly archival footage.

Love the 5.1 sound mix. I think the studio should campaign for technical awards.

Yes, there's Spanish subtitles. Even the songs are translated!

the good:

-concert footage shot on film from the 1978 earls court shows and alternative angles from the hammersmith shows in 4K, proving that outtakes and original negatives (?) do exist. so the potential for these shows to be released for a possible 4k/blu ray release is very high.

-the movie highlighting why i've always liked bowie and leans towards his music... he was a natural fan of the arts in all it's forms. Imbued it intensely (mime work/painter/actor etc) and not for show. Compared to some entertainers with their attention seeking tactics like Lady Gaga (just the worst)
His innovation and experimentation with music and genres truly doesn't get enough credit. If he did, the only bowie tshirts I see people wearing wouldnt just be the 'aladdin sane' cover one. Posers.
Minus the 'playing it safe 80's dance stuff', his music never bored me up until the very end.

thats about it for the positive aspects of the movie.

the bad (its quite abit):

-The most offensive thing? not letting at least ONE live song play in full.

-The annoying use of sound effects like explosions interrupting flow of performance. Very grating.

I was going to import the blu-ray from the UK, but i was impatient and bought the 4K version on VUDU. and boy i'm glad i didnt bother. The performances in 5.1 are marred and heavily truncated.

-The generic overdramatic route-journey that plagues most documentaries. It's not as heavy here, but it is there.

Bowie was known for being VERY witty and funny, but this is all just so solemn with it's serious introspective-nessessesss.

Morgen began sifting through Bowie’s archives: stills, 16mm, 35mm film; a grand total of five million assets. “We blew through our entire budget, because we only anticipated that there would be four months’ material to screen,” he says. “It took two years.”

I started getting annoyed when the movie kept cutting back to clips from 'the man who fell to earth", as it began to feel like an Ad for the upcoming 4K release at that point.
This could have been remedied by not spending so much wasted screen time in that era?

Brett Morgen, not unsurprisingly, can vividly recall meeting David Bowie. In 2007, the documentary specialist pitched a non-fiction, on the road film to the musician. The meeting didn’t go well. “He pissed on one of my movies,” snorts Morgen, referring to Chicago 10, a part-animated take on the anti-war protestors put on trial following the 1968 Democratic National Convention. “He was being pretty harsh.”

Morgen, an outspoken man, wasn’t about to be cowed. An assistant interjected, asking what his favorite Bowie album was. “I looked at him and said, ‘Well, to be totally candid, David, I can’t say I’ve appreciated anything you’ve done since ’83.’

But seeing as the director wasn't a fan of bowie's later career, it does explain the absence of 9 albums and constantly dwelling in the 70's. The album hours... got me into bowie fyi

-i was watching this alone and i was cringing so hard when the clips of 'johnny mnemonic' and 'event horizon' were interspersed with the live performance of 'hallo spaceboy'. Using one or two clips to drive home an aesthetic of 'techno-cyber punk-vibes' is cool and all, but it just kept going back to them, accompanied with those embarrassing sound effects i mentioned earlier.
like....why? it was painful to sit through, and it does not come off anywhere near as cool as he thinks he does. No wonder bowie wasn't a fan of this dude's work.

The best reasoning I can come up with was that the live performance was from 96, aaaaannnnd both those movies came out in 95/97 soooo that was the justification for including those clips? like a 90s gritty industrial tone? regardless, so unbearably tacky.

I was already offended enough when he used THE remix version of hallo spaceboy with the petshop boys inclusion for the intro. That's when I knew I something was off.

-I dont understand the appeal of watching this movie in IMAX considering i'm positive they used some youtube footage with its interlaced pixelated lo-res image quality on full display. God knows how awful that looked on the big screen.

Everyone in this thread is talking about a 4K release but what this movie needs is an extended cut, keep your cheesy 'event horizon' clips in there, just remove the sound effects and let the songs play in full, then you got something worth buying my boy!

if they do restore the earls court 1978 and 1973 hammersmith shows, which i desperately want to see so i can play loud as possible. I hope they keep brett morgen away from the project. Get a decent director to put it all together and let Tony Visconti do the mix ALL BY HIMSELF. The audio team of bohemian rhapsody and their unnecessary heavy use of reverb effects, can stay home.
Honestly, i'm offended over the praise the audio production is receiving on here. It appears they also added backing vocals to some live tracks that don't exist, to 'spice up' the segment. Which borders on sacrilegious and should not be rewarded.

and playing the solo vocal chorus of 'move on' non-backwards doesn't garner any points with me. This thing feels like a missed opportunity.
