![]() ![]() Let's have a thread dedicated to discussing the Blu-ray releases of the Studio Ghibli Collection library. I was thinking that this thread is primarily focused on the US releases provided by Disney, but discussing releases from all around the world is also welcome. (And with new Disk 2 extras, not simply wasting the entire second disk on the complete storyboards....Better covers, though.) |

I was about to pre-order Ponyo on amazon.
Among the search results, I saw the "new" dvds from Disney. I almost had a heart attack because the packaging resembles BDs but they are only DVD release (due March 2nd, 2010) quite disappointed |

Disney is hoping that Ponyo sells well. If it does well then we get the Blu-rays of the older movies. Also Japan doesn't have the older movies yet so we will get them either sometime after or when released in Japan but no sooner then that.
With the re-releases being on dvd only when the Ponyo movie comes out well that's supposed to help sell Ponyo kind of like a hyping it up to get more people to buy it for those who're new to the Studio Ghibli titles. |

Japan is pretty stingy about those things, that's the main reason. Don't expect Disney US to release the older Ghibli titles until after Japan does it. But in Region-B land, it might come first. Like how Spain released Spirited Away (upconverted master though...)

"Nausicaa" appears to be the first blu-ray Miyazaki film to be issued (per blu-ray.com) in a few months.

To answer the header,
A) They didn't have the HD masters when the first ones came out, and B) They didn't have the rights to HD masters when the first ones came out, because C) As they're not Disney movies, Toho wanted hometown crack at any HD releases first, before any other importable country beat them to it. As noted, we have Nausicaa coming up, and...only Nausicaa announced for the moment. (Trust us folks, it was this bad back when the first DVD's were coming out, and it was tough enough getting the original Godzillas.) |

Pretty excited about Gake no ue no Ponyo. I saw the movie on TV in Japan about two weeks ago (SD TV, no HD) and loved it.
Unfortunately, the Disney release has lossy audio, so I'll be ordering the JPN version off Amazon Japan instead. It'll be more expensive, but worth it, in my opinion. Little note to thread starter: J*P is a derogatery term. It might be better to either write Japan(ese) or use the international abbreviation JPN. |

There is a 10$ off coupon coming soon, the website is not yet up however.
I find it odd that its not up when its only a week away from its release... Also, if you order the blu (or DVD) from amazon, you can order another Studio Ghibli film (although a DVD..) for 10 dollars off. |

I will not be upgrading to Blu on any of these movies. The Up-converted DVD's look amazing and I just don't see how the jump could be that much better. In fact imo no hand drawn animation looks that much better on blu. CGI yes, hand drawn no. I also don't think the audio upgrade will be a huge jump. If it is I might pick up a couple but doubtful. With that said I will probably get Ponyo on blu because it was a great movie and my kid really liked it. If I am blown away that might change my mind.
Also the price will prob stay high on these just like the DVDs. |
