I wonder why not even a single Ghibli title has made it to 4K yet when even smaller anime studios/titles have embraced the format. Any other studio would have jumped on the 4K bandwagon and milked these movies to death. With Ghibli eventually agreeing and licensing these titles even for streaming, I wonder what's the hold up with 4K?! Makes no sense to me.

They showed Earwig and the Witch in 4K in cinemas. But after it bombed, they probably skipped the 4K release (and it's also worth noting that the Blu-ray release wasn't even distributed by Disney like most Ghibli releases).
They are probably waiting for Hayao Miyazaki's film to come out and become a blockbuster before they're ready for a 4K release.

The Red Turtle didn't do that well at the box office, and when it came out on Blu-ray, Disney hasn't started releasing 4K UHD discs yet. (if Ghibli/Disney/Panasonic did release The Red Turtle in 4K UHD the same day as the Blu-ray, it would've been Disney's first 4K UHD release, even predating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or even the Blu-ray release of Rogue One, which would've been a better candidate for first Disney 4K).

Panasonic Media Labs and Walt Disney Japan (the two biggest collaborators with Studio Ghibil) have already released Mary and the Witch's Flower and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence in 4K UHD.
Mary and Innocence came out in 2018, a year after GotG 2 and the same year they released the likes of The Last Jedi, Black Panther and Infinity War in 4K.
Also, 2018 is the only year when Disney released 4K UHDs that had dynamic HDR and were not Fox repackages (Mary and Innocence in HDR10+, The Last Jedi and Black Panther in Dolby Vision).

If Earwig did well at the Japanese box office, maybe it would've received a 4K UHD release.
It reminds me of when Ghibli released the OVA Iblard Time on Blu-ray the exact same day as Tales from Earthsea, which was only released on DVD and VHS at the time.
Some of the earlier Ghibli DVDs were also authored by Sony instead of Panasonic.

I really wish the main Disney films (from Marvel, Lucasfilm, etc...) would actually be authored by Sony or Panasonic instead. We already saw would it would be like with the Japanese 4K UHD releases of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, as well as the Jon Watts Spider-Man films.

What other studios hire services from Sony or Panasonic for disc authoring/mastering?
I do know Studio Khara hires Sony to author their discs, at least in Japan. And it's obvious Sony authors their own films.

In any case, we have no choice but to wait for the next Miyazaki film before we get Ghibli in 4K.
After that release, the floodgates for 4K Ghibli will open. The same thing happened with My Neighbors the Yamadas when it gave way for Ghibli on DVD, and with Ponyo for Blu-ray.

Lastly, I do hope that Studio Ghibli strikes out new analogue 35mm (or maybe even 70mm for more subtle grain) film prints of all the digital Ghibli films (starting with Yamada) with the best film recorders out there (maybe laser ones). That way those 35mm/70mm printouts can then be scanned digitally for a more natural upscale than just upscaling the 2K animation files and adding an artificial 35mm film grain/gate weave filter over the thing.
It would also make Ghibli's signature analogue look even more authentic since the films were actually taken from 35mm/70mm printouts.

Remember, they didn't release Tales from Earthsea on Blu-ray in day-one because it was both a critical and box office disappointment (it still did really well, but it wasn't the massive blockbuster that was usually expected of Ghibli).
Ponyo, however, is such a massive blockbuster that they started their Blu-ray lineup with it.

Now, I don't know why they started with My Neighbors the Yamadas for DVD, when it was one of the lowest-grossing Ghibli films of all time.

Still, I am confident that How Do You Live will be the first 4K Ghibli release.

The mom and kids share some resemblance for sure. The dad looks standard Ghibli.

Finally! I'm happy he's finished it. This might be the last true Ghibli film and surely the final Miyazaki directed/animated film. Hopefully it can get a USA release within 2023. TBH i don't really have an idea of what the movie is about though lol

I think he might write some scripts but I truly think he's finished animating and directing feature films.

I've said this before, but i would like him to reconcile with Oshii and make Anchor before all is said and done. And also help teach goro how to make a good movie

The bonus disc of Kaguya-hime is not available on the standard Shout release. The Universal release has it but only on DVD. There is a Blu-ray version included with the Shout SteelBook.

By the way, what's up with the Shout version of Ocean Waves? Is it the same as the Universal release?
