Really hope the lossy Japanese audio is not duplicated on further releases, or at least I hope the Japanese versions contain English subs. I'm really hoping this was a simple misunderstanding with Ponyo's audio and not mandated by Ghibli.

Seeing I have kids now I cant focus too much on the Jp track since my youngest isnt at reading age. Even though he probably doesnt pay much attention to the words, at some point he would. I can live with the english dub hd track for now.

Just sent an email to Disney Home Entertainment expressing my dissatisfaction with their decision to not include a lossless Japanese Audio Track on their release of Ponyo. Maybe if enough of us complain, they will do something about it for future catalog releases...

I actually did something like that through their comments/complaints part of their site or something, and they responded with the canned "we'll take it into consideration." Hopefully it does make a difference in the future.

I don't think so last I heard it didn't have any date just that they would release it in America.

Nausicaa is coming to Australia in November. Hopefully a US release is on the way.

I'm not familiar with the deal inked post Kiki's Delivery Service, but that move had changes made that were approved by Miyazaki himself. The changes were made to resonate more with western culture, but in effect, they just plain made the movie better. I think the english version of the movie is much better than the Japanese version with all the changes coming together so well.

I think that since then though, ghibli has learned a lot about sound effects, scoring, and writing characters. So many changes are not necessary.

They're gonna restore Heidi directly from the 35 mm negative for a Japanese BOXSET! Maybe that means we'll have a blu-ray release soon.

Now that Nausicaa is out, Kiki is my most wanted next release. But I don't think that'll be coming right away, unfortunately.

I believe Disney would release a title after a BD version of the Japanese one has been in the market for a couple of months. So far, it looks like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor the Yamadas, and The Borrower Arrietty are next.

Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite, so I'm waiting for the Blu on that. Princess Mononoke would be nice too.

castle in the sky has been out in Japan since december.


Kiki's Delivery Service is my most favorite, but I also really like all of the changes originally made by disney for their original release (changes approved by Miyazaki) and I think it made a better movie. For the most recent DVD re-release they removed a lot of those changes and made it more like the Japanese original, which I think is unfortunate. Several of Phil Hartman's added lines for Jiji were removed, a lot of the extra sound effects were removed, and some of the re-done score was replaced with the Japanese original.

If it does ever get released, I might have to buy it and then try to remux it with Disney's original track from the first re-lease DVD that I own.

Can't wait to have Tonari no Yamada-kun on Blu-ray. I have it on DVD and it has so many funny, and recognizable, parts in it, it always cracks me up.

The Japanese release has a Japanese DTS HD MA 5.1 track, so I'm hoping for the same treatment in the US. Otherwise I'll need to get the more expensive Japanese release.

I am hoping for Castle in the Sky and My Neighbors the Yamadas in 2011. It'd be nice to get some kind of announcement from Disney! I am wondering if we won't see these in the US until later this year, as they usually make their debuts around the rest of the world first. Both of these titles won't be released in the UK until 5/9, so maybe we won't get an announcement for a US release until sometime after that?

Unfortunately, Arrietty the Borrower will not premiere in US theaters until 2/17/12 (unless they change it), so we will probably not see a Blu-ray release until late 2012, if we're lucky. I think the US home video release of Ponyo took a while after it left the theaters, but I am not 100% sure.
