That disclaimer on the back cover means it has an anti-reverse importation measure that only affects Japan. If you try playing the disc in a player that has it's country code set to Japan, it won't work. Any other country it will though. |

I just got a copy of the original Bandai Visual release and it's pillarboxed like the Maiden Japan edition; the reviewer's assumption that the Bandai one wasn't like this is wrong. That aside, I didn't pay a ton for it at all and the presentation is gorgeous. Absolutely lovely packaging.
EDIT: I meant windowboxed, sorry for the confusion. Last edited by Kyle15; 03-16-2020 at 10:34 PM. |

![]() ![]() On the topic of Honnêamise, I have the 1990 CAV Laserdisc box set. I did an unboxing of sorts for it in the haul thread here so people can see how beautiful Laserdisc releases are, and how we'll never match them with today's releases. Now, this was the CAV re-issue of the first home video transfer (previously a 1987 CLV disc), so it gives an interesting perspective on how the film was first seen by many people. Now, all the JP and NA BDs are windowboxed, while the UK/FR releases (the same disc) aren't because they cropped the image to fill more of the screen (a bad idea, IMO). So, how does the LD compare? They f**king have it windowboxed as well. This makes no sense, as literally every other letterboxed LD I have that isn't supposed to be replicating a 1.66:1 AR or something like that is not windowboxed. A good example of a LD set that's windowboxed intentionally to preserve the correct aspect ratio of their films is the James Bond Connery Collection Vol. 1 set. It's an amazing set, and the windowboxing is to preserve the 1.66:1 AR of the first 3 films. Wings of Honnêamise has no excuse. The film was produced for a 1.85:1 AR, so either that or a 1.78:1 are equally as acceptable, IMO, so this windowboxing nonsense is rather illogical. In 1998 there was a remastered edition of the film, also on LD, but also on DVD. I might get it (not sure if on LD or DVD, however), but from what I've heard it's also windowboxed. The old Manga Ent DVD is as well, so literally every major home video release of this film is windowboxed (save for the UK/FR release which cropped it out and removed picture information, so I don't really count it), so I suspect that when Bandai does the 4K UHD (which we know they'll do at some point along with the Patlabor films- they are the cash cows that always show up on each new format) it'll be windowboxed as well until someone there decides to give a damn and present the film in either 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 I would take screencaptures, but with LD it's rather tricky, but I intend to eventually make a full post on the multiple releases of this film some day, and by then, I'll have sorted out the screencap issues. |
