Question Anime Questions |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads

This thread is for when you want to know the answer to something anime related, but don't want to make a whole individual thread for it. Or can't make a thread. Or don't want to get roundly mocked.

No question too small! Or too dumb!

*PSA: PLEASE DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS RELATED TO EBAY OR SCALPING BECAUSE NEOZ AND CRAZYBLUE WILL FIND YOU

Default Will anime be on UHD Blu-Ray?

I know it's just a matter of time, I'm just wondering what the first release should, would be?

I imagine an older anime shot on film will take more advantage of the format. Any ideas?

God I hope not. Imagine how much companies would try to charge for that kind of thing. I'm good with 1080

Maybe a select few theatrical features, but everyday anime? Nope. Way, WAY too expensive to produce.

If only people would figure out that resolution isn't everything. If only they'd actually buy a GOOD display (nope, I can't think of any you can buy right now; look for a used Pioneer plasma) and have it professionally calibrated, or better yet, get a proper projector setup. Slap a Japanese Ghibli release on there, and you'd be able to convince most people it was UHD...

Aniplex doesn't need a reason to charge $1000 for anime releases...

Can we NOT turn this into another silly anti-Aniplex thread, please?

4K looks really good to me so far, but I hope they don't start putting anime on the format because I assume that they will just release stuff that's already on bluray which they are fairly certain will sell. Those resources would be better used putting stuff on bluray that hasn't gotten a release yet.

That's the real question isn't it? It's not so much the resolution but the increased color pallet of HDR that should make the difference here.

I wonder how many anime are rendered or scanned in 4K. I can only think of the Giant Robo OVA, Megazone 23 OVA and Belladonna of Sadness.

(You know there's a problem with people's brains when a freaking review thread gets derailed to do the same exact *****ing about prices that was done months before)

I just saved everyone the trouble of repeating the same tired arguments from the past 5 years.

To get back on topic instead of repeating the same arguments I make against people *****ing about Aniplex prices (let it go people, let it go), UHD anime Blu-rays are unlikely to happen. The process for making anime is already chaotic enough (tape being delivered hours before air, various episodes looking crappy from lack of time (budget isn't that much of a factor, One Punch Man which looks amazing for example had an average budget according to I think the animation director), getting this or this, or this) and most series still aren't even being animated in 1080P. And the difference between 720P and 1080P for anime is already negligible (remember, animation is line art), and anything animated digitally is forever locked at the resolution it was made in. That's why you don't see much of a difference on say Last Exile. Only cel-animated anime being rescanned again would really benefit that much, as well as maybe the backgrounds on newer anime. Though who knows if they'd bother, this list continues to grow and what gets a Blu-ray release can be rather random.

We will, but by then streaming will be how 99% of video media is accessed in North America and Europe. Japan will have a niche otaku market for physical releases but if the trend continues over here, we'll stop seeing physical releases of smaller, or not critically-acclaimed shows.

My guess is that the fans overseas will have to resort to buying import sets for most shows with the occasional home release of older or more popular series at exorbitant prices. These will be most likely be collector sets only, as the younger generations will vastly prefer to own content digitally or simply stream it.

That's exactly the reason why I brought up HDR. Animation in particular can benefit from HDR, and it doesn't necessarily have to be 4k. The format does support 1080p/720p after all.

Almost all cel-animated anime series were done in 16mm with OP/ED done in 35mm. Only cel-animated anime movies and OVA were done in 35mm.

Except the resolution, the only benefit for a UHD Anime will be HDR and 10 bits encoding (no more banding).

Akira has been rescanned in 4K already. For me, I hope original GiTS will be the first UHD Anime because the PQ of the Blu-ray isn't so good.

There are some things that probably should not seen in 4K, like porn.

Doubt it. Maybe newer stuff maybe. As far as old stuff probably not even worth them trying to re scan it.

I doubt it would entirely supplant Blu-rays.

Then in regards to digitally-animated works, I'd see only some of the non-TV adaptation theatrical anime (the vast majority of anime movies are based off something already on TV these days) and stuff from like KyoAni (they've come a long way, and have progressed even further) possibly benefiting. Everyone else? Probably won't happen, especially again with how chaotic anime production is.

Even if it does go 4K which I hope to God it never does when I won't support it.

Maybe if it is priced right but other then that no reason to upgrade again and again.
