This thread is for when you want to know the answer to something anime related, but don't want to make a whole individual thread for it. Or can't make a thread. Or don't want to get roundly mocked.
No question too small! Or too dumb! *PSA: PLEASE DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS RELATED TO EBAY OR SCALPING BECAUSE NEOZ AND CRAZYBLUE WILL FIND YOU Last edited by neoz; 06-16-2016 at 06:46 AM. |

Maybe a select few theatrical features, but everyday anime? Nope. Way, WAY too expensive to produce.
If only people would figure out that resolution isn't everything. If only they'd actually buy a GOOD display (nope, I can't think of any you can buy right now; look for a used Pioneer plasma) and have it professionally calibrated, or better yet, get a proper projector setup. Slap a Japanese Ghibli release on there, and you'd be able to convince most people it was UHD... Last edited by Naiera; 04-05-2016 at 03:40 PM. |

Aniplex doesn't need a reason to charge $1000 for anime releases...

4K looks really good to me so far, but I hope they don't start putting anime on the format because I assume that they will just release stuff that's already on bluray which they are fairly certain will sell. Those resources would be better used putting stuff on bluray that hasn't gotten a release yet.

I wouldn't be to surprised if Akira eventually got a UHD release with the remake being in the works , if it ever gets outa the starting gates that is

The process for making anime is already chaotic enough (tape being delivered hours before air, various episodes looking crappy from lack of time (budget isn't that much of a factor, One Punch Man which looks amazing for example had an average budget according to I think the animation director), getting this or this, or this) and most series still aren't even being animated in 1080P. And the difference between 720P and 1080P for anime is already negligible (remember, animation is line art), and anything animated digitally is forever locked at the resolution it was made in. That's why you don't see much of a difference on say Last Exile. Only cel-animated anime being rescanned again would really benefit that much, as well as maybe the backgrounds on newer anime. Though who knows if they'd bother, this list continues to grow and what gets a Blu-ray release can be rather random. |

We will, but by then streaming will be how 99% of video media is accessed in North America and Europe. Japan will have a niche otaku market for physical releases but if the trend continues over here, we'll stop seeing physical releases of smaller, or not critically-acclaimed shows.
My guess is that the fans overseas will have to resort to buying import sets for most shows with the occasional home release of older or more popular series at exorbitant prices. These will be most likely be collector sets only, as the younger generations will vastly prefer to own content digitally or simply stream it. |

Almost all cel-animated anime series were done in 16mm with OP/ED done in 35mm. Only cel-animated anime movies and OVA were done in 35mm.
Except the resolution, the only benefit for a UHD Anime will be HDR and 10 bits encoding (no more banding). Akira has been rescanned in 4K already. For me, I hope original GiTS will be the first UHD Anime because the PQ of the Blu-ray isn't so good. |

There are some things that probably should not seen in 4K, like porn.
