Fist of the North Star, all 152 episodes on 3 discs... something called SDBD. I'm guessing its the standard DVD picture quality on a Bluray disc, that way they can fit like 50 episodes per disc.... thoughts? I'm not a fan of something like that, but what about everyone else? Naiera, very interested in your opinion here. Last edited by patch5129; 09-24-2017 at 01:53 PM. Reason: Oops, wrong person. |

SDBD has been done before. It is, as you suggest, standard definition on Blu-ray. 50 episodes on a BD50 leaves about 900 megabytes for each episode, which isn't really something special, but at least it should benefit from AVC encoding, rather than outdated and comparatively inefficient MPEG2 with forced fake sharpness.

The master used for the DVD and SDBD is based on a HD remaster from 2008. It would not be surprising if Toei hasn't given Discotek access to the full HD master, seeing as it has yet to receive a Blu-ray release in Japan.

Discotek/easternstar Seems to have subtitle problems on many of their releases that I've experienced. Usually grammatical stuff. It annoys me especially since many of their shows are sub only. You'd think they'd put more work into QC.

In terms of PQ, I wonder if it would actually be worth upgrading the Discotek DVDs for? Still waiting for a Blu-ray release of the 1986 movie...

I've asked this question time and time again, both to this forum and Discotech themselves, and I've never gotten a response from anyone. Is it 480p? 480i? Is further color crush via further compression inevitable with only about 900 megabytes an episode? Apparently nobody knows!

If they can't get a 25 minute episode of a show in great quality in AVC at only 480p, those encoders should be fired. |

Same here. Even if it's still standard definition, I appreciate having more episodes on fewer discs as well as being on a more durable (as in scratches) format. That being said, I've never seen anything having to do with Fist of the North Star and I'm intrigued by this release. Skimmed a few episodes on Crunchyroll and it looks really interesting.

I wouldn't mind if there wasn't a true HD transfer available, but considering UY does (and received a physical release in Japan), I would be quite disappointed with a SD BD release that downscales the HD source. Granted, it would still be a huge improvement over the AnimEigo DVDs, but it's just the principle of the thing.
