GKIDS/Shout anime blu-rays typically come out 2-4 months after the theater screenings, which for Tokyo Godfathers is in March. The blu-ray is probably going to come out in the May-July range.

Caught the theatrical release of the new restoration last night. There were a few oddities with the subtitles - for no discernible reason they were presented at the top of the frame for half of the scene where the gang meet-up at Hanna's old club, and a few moments where we are shown kanji in close-up during dialog isn't translated in favor of just captioning the dialog. Other than that this seems like it will be a perfectly fine release, I didn't notice any DNR that wasn't already present on the previous versions I own, though I'm hardly the expert on the matter.

The dub is terrific. What a great movie to see theatrically, even if the Sugarland, TX AMC mistakenly showed 10-15 minutes of the subbed version first.

I'm actually hoping for a remaster of Paprika as well. The Sony disc has a bit left to be desired, or well, at least the overscan bars.

The 2018 Manga UK release rectified that.

Wasn't Toyko Godfathers created entirely digitally, but the HD master made back in the day was a 35mm filmout with denoising?

Still no reviews anywhere of this? I have the Australian disc, hoping this is an improvement.

Watched my copy last night, and completely forgot how great this film is. Simply entertaining from start to finish.

I've Amazon pre-ordered DVD+BD blind and it arrived yesterday.

Like the way the characters are human looking and not anime'd-up.

Good story, many unexpected turns, excellent animation. I thought the sub-titles were ugly but it turns out I was watching the DVD, not BD. BD has smaller, less pixelated font, thus less intrusive. Quality of translated English sub (I've only listed for about a minute) sounded really good. The whole thing reminded me of the Japanese series Midnight Diner on Netflix.

I think this would make a great movie to watch towards end of the year.

This was the last thing I saw in theaters before the virus hit and the new dub is amazing.

Any comments on the picture quality? Dying to hear how it looks and there are no reviews anywhere or anything...

Is it true that this does not have english subtitles available for the Japanese audio? I read comments stating this on Amazon and found it very hard to believe. I'm sure the new english dub has its merits but I'd by far prefer to watch this in Japanese with english subs.

I bet you they are reviews from a different release, remember to always check the dates with Amazon, since they still insist on combining reviews.

Edit: Just looked at Amazon, looks like you're right. It's hard to tell if they are talking about the physical or digital release though.

I think those reviews are for the Prime Video version.

You're definitely right about that. Amazon's insistence on throwing all reviews together is an absolute mess at times. Thanks for taking a look.

Hopefully that's the case. Given GKIDS experience with localizing anime, I can't imagine that's an intentional decision they would make with the physical release, although I suppose it could be an error perhaps.
