That is what appears on this disc.

Hi

Jumping in to clarify, this is a restoration produced by Umbrella.

Keep an eye out on Umbrella's social media for more info on this one and the Sunburnt Screens label (we've got a few in the mix I think you'll be happy about).

Cheers
Simon Sherry

FilmInk are reliable, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Considering the producer himself still owns the rights to the movie in Australia and the disc is produced by Umbrella, it makes sense that there's no Criterion or Janus logos even if they did do the restoration.

Just finished watching this. The first time since it's cinema release and it hold up beautifully. The disc is sensational and I highly recommend it.

Funny for some reason I don't think the film was ever released in Australia on VHS tape which might have had something to do with United Artists in Australia holding the rights for some period of time.

Anyway great to see the film again and I'm looking forward to more announcements from Umbrella's Sunburnt Screens label.

My prediction for the next title to be released (and NO I have no heard anything this is a guess) is probably Bliss (1985) and hopefully both versions (the 1985 Cannes edition and the re-edited version that was released in cinemas in Australia later in 1985).

My review for this disc is done, hopefully it'll appear on MichaelDVD today or tomorrow. It really is an impressive disc. According to Simon, this was a 4K scan of the internegative, and the source is in great shape.

There's 90 mins of new interviews on the disc, the piece with Richard Chamberlain was actually done with video conferencing in May due to COVID. His input is fantastic, and he looks terrific for 86 years old.

However I do think that Umbrella need to step up their game a touch with the interviews; they need more cutaways to stills and BTS photos, and they need some musical accompaniment. You can also hear sniffling behind the camera during the McElroy interview. Just some minor feedback

A month late on this, but are you sure you aren't confusing this with Walkabout, which Criterion did a new 4K restoration of that played last year at the AMIA Reel Thing in Los Angeles

Criterion's 4k restoration of Walkabout was indeed completed and screened last year. Criterion are slow at getting their remasters onto disc with waiting for approvals and such, but the remastered Second Sight LE UK Blu uses this restoration.

It was said some 400 pages back in the Criterion thread that Janus Films had completed a 4k remaster for The Last Wave and were set to screen it in April of this year before COVID shut things down.

That would certainly explain why barely anyone I know has even heard of it, or why I didn't know much about it until Criterion released it.

I apparently missed the Last Wave news, but so much stuff gets posted in threads like that it is easy to miss stuff.

So, does that mean Criterion still has American Rights and might release it soon?

No. I'm in Australia and I've been trying to access the site myself for a number of days now and no go. It must be down.

The site has been down for a few weeks now following a ransomware attack. There's no estimated timeframe for getting it back up, but fingers crossed it rises from the dead.

They have US distribution rights from when parent company Janus Films (a theatrical art-house specialty label that was also a predecessor to the Criterion Collection) bought them from Rhino in the 90s.

Not sure, I just know that Michael (the site admin) is working on recovering all the data and getting the site back online.

Ah. So it attacked the Site Data, not the Visitors.

So sad to see the site still seems to be down. But thanks for making your review available.

I've always liked the site - seems to be written by folks who love film, and while the reviews are short and not super technical, they contain a wealth of useful info. Plus I find I often agree with the overall assessments of disc quality. Helps with shopping and choosing what's worth importing AU to US.

Hope you're all back up and running soon.
