Rogan is way more intelligent than he looks, but the roles he often plays in don't really show it.

I was very surprised to see that Judd Hirsch, Jeannie Berlin, and Robin Bartlett were added to the cast. Steven Spielberg really knows how to pick good actors and actresses for his films; I can't wait to see the movie once it's finished and released next year!

His father wasn't a villain, though...Spielberg learned very late in life that his father left the family for reasons -- you don't need to know the personal details -- but grew up thinking his father walked out on them, and only learned that for the good of the children, his father stayed silent about it for decades. The specter of divorce and child separation haunts a lot of Spielberg's work, but so does the idea of forgiveness and reunion. Anyway, this project has been simmering in the pot for a very long time. I think I first heard about it in either the late 80's or early 90's. Finally shoot it reminds me in a way of Mr. Spielberg wanting to direct a full-on musical, which has been in his wheelhouse ever since we flashes of it in 1941 and Temple of Doom and The Color Purple and Hook. Good to see Mr. Spielberg getting these projects out after so long.

According to Kaminski, this movie will be really dramatic.

Quote:
Up next for the collaborators is The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical film based on Spielberg’s childhood which Kaminski says charts his coming-of-age journey between ages six and 18. “What’s special about The Fabelmans is that he’s able to, as a filmmaker and an artist…be very honest about his background, very honest about his family, not sugarcoating this stuff and revealing part of himself that nobody really knows about,” says Kaminski. “So, that’s the most courageous thing I found about making this movie, and it’s very, very emotional.”

The DP says that while the upcoming film has its “little entertaining moments,” it’s for the most part a straight drama. “His life, compared to the kids coming from Afghanistan or Syria, was very idyllic, but it’s not a sugarcoated life. Having so many siblings and growing up in several different cities, you are, at the end, displaced. You’re not just displaced physically, but you’re also emotionally displaced. So, this is about him finding the love of his life, which is making movies, and the consequences of choosing the art form as your primary life interest,” he explains. “The theme to the movie is that this business, the art will tear you apart, and at the end, you’re choosing it because you love it so much.”

This theme, Kaminski says, is one that he connects to through his own experiences. “Certainly, I can attest to that. [The business] does tear you apart. It becomes the most important element of your life, and there are consequences and there are rewards,” he says. “So, it’s a great movie. We cried often, making the movie.”
