Just saw Fabelmans.
It's the best and most disappointing movie of the year. It's a love letter to early films with stuff showcasing how they used to make home movies back in the day and really have a good family dynamic, then the second 1/2 happens, and [Show spoiler]

I hate the fact that none of my local theaters have this playing. It played for a week and now it's gone. I was going to go see it tonight (the first day I have had off in more than a week) and now I can't. Universal really dropped the ball on this film.

![]() Great way to get people to go to the theater. Essentially let people know if they don't see it opening week. It will be online in a few weeks. ![]() |

They've basically treated it like they did Belfast last year.

Only movie I looked forward to and I didn't like it. A main character was too despicable and obnoxious. The laughs didn’t land right and it was so melodramatic and stereotypical. It's baffling this is what Spielberg wanted to say about his family life.
This sites review was spot-on and I'd say it's in Spielberg's bottom 5. |

It’s not often you leave a theater in tears because the film you just watched was perfect in every way. A very special and unique feeling for sure.

Funny, because I thought that was the film's best part. My audience actually laughed during those scenes, and the film finally felt alive. I dozed off a bit during the Judd Hirsch scene.
There are a lot of cliches, the proto-fascist antisemitic Aryan-looking kids being one of them. Maybe Spielberg experienced that in real life, so it makes me feel prouder of my high school, because I didn't see any religious bigotry growing up. Of course, the main character is pretty flawless and doesn't do anything wrong. It's always the people around him that are committing the wrongs he experiences. There's very little self-criticism here from Spielberg upon reflection. He also seems to have at least come from a family of means. His father seems to have had a good-paying job, judging from their large house(s) on single salary supporting, what, three kids and a stay-at-home mom? There are worse fates to suffer growing up. I didn't have a problem with Michelle Williams. She's playing a free spirit. I didn't pick up on the "mental problems," but I'm not trained in recognizing that sort of thing. She's a dyed-in-the-wool artist given no artistic outlet, so she acts out in eccentric ways. Seth Rogen was a bit wasted (I'm not sure why he was cast, as he didn't bring anything to the role that any other actor couldn't). David Lynch looked a bit too thin for the real guy he was playing, and his voice was definitely too...Lynchian. The real guy didn't sound like that. But it's really just a punchline scene. I find that it is one of those films that's more fun to dissect vis-a-vis one's knowledge of Spielberg the man than to actually watch. |
