Shinsuke Satō to Direct Hollywood Live-Action Film Adaptation of My Hero Academia

Entertainment news sources Variety and Deadline reported on Friday that Shinsuke Satō (live-action Bleach, Alice in Borderland, Kingdom, Death Note Light up the NEW world, Gantz, I am a Hero) is directing Legendary's Hollywood live-action film adaptation of Kōhei Horikoshi My Hero Academia manga.

Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter are overseeing the project for Legendary Entertainment, while Ryōsuke Yoritomi, the manga's editor, will oversee the project for Shueisha. TOHO will distribute the film in Japan.

I'll probably get a load of shit for this but I thought the movie adaptations of Ghost In The Shell and Battle Angel Alita were pretty good.

I agree with the second title. Edge of Tomorrow is good too even though its based on the light novel with no apparent references to the manga adaption.

Pacific Rim isn't based on a anime but IMO it's the best homage to the mecha genre to come from Hollywood. And there's several good movies that the creators admitted taking anime influences for, like The Matrix. Hollyweird should just stick to those instead of adapting the unadaptable.

Alita Battle Angel is legit. I love it.

Edge of Tomorrow is good but I don't consider it an adaptation cause it is nothing like the light novel.

Cannot agree more. If they have to use an existing IP to get the film made, though, I wish they'd do more stuff like Detective Pikachu where it's set in the same universe, but tells a different story with new characters. That would free up the filmmakers to come up with a script that works more naturally for a 2-hour movie, rather than trying to cram however many volumes/episodes into that runtime. Or, if they don't wanna go that route, approach it like they do comic book films, where you take elements from different storylines and combine them along with new material. Obviously, most manga don't have the decades of storylines that a given superhero might, but I think there's ways to make that approach work.

I thought they were both very decent, could have been slightly better, but definitely not the disasters some make them out to be (Iíve already watched them a few times now, and I donít tend to do that if a film is crap).
It certainly helped that they had sizeable budgets and plenty of talent in front and behind the cameras (both films looked absolutely stunning, so the design teams definitely did their jobs).

Throw a decent budget at MHA, hire decent talent, and it might have a chance.

After production delays due to major injury and the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Shinichiro Watanabe’s 1990s anime classic “Cowboy Bebop” is finally arriving.

The streamer has today released the first official images from the project and set a November 19th launch date for the ten-episode series which stars John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Alex Hassell as Vicious and Elena Satine as Julia.

“Alias” and “Fringe” duo Andre Nemec and Jeff Pinkner are behind this version written by Christopher Yost (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “The Mandalorian”) while original composer Yoko Kanno will return to do the music.

At least the music will probably be good with Yoko Kanno returning.

Titan Publishing will collaborate with Netflix to publish both tie-in books and a new comics series for their upcoming live-action take on the classic 1990s anime series “Cowboy Bebop”.

“Cowboy Bebop: The Comic Series” will be written by DC veteran Dan Watters and finds the Bebop crew chasing down an ex-gang member who holds a vest which gives the wearer unlimited luck.

The book “Cowboy Bebop: A Syndicate Story: Red Planet Requiem” is written by series writer Sean Cummings and serves as something of a prequel – exploring the show’s fictional history through the eyes of a young Spike Spiegel and his friend turned rival, Vicious.

Finally there’s a making-of book by Jeff Bond which contains a ton of concept art and behind-the-scenes photos along with chronicling the long and tumultuous production of the series.

“Cowboy Bebop” will debut November 19th on Netflix while the novel arrives November 23rd, the comic hits in December, and the making of book comes out January 11th.

Why? The series has always been a flop in the U.S. despite how great the series is.

The positive note is someone might be a bit more courageous to release Saint Seiya on Blu-ray in the US.
