Well not necessarily. Just look at Battle Angel Alita. That still isn’t on Blu-ray or even a DVD release since 1999.

They actually "re-released" the DVD in 2008 with a print run of 10,000, but changed the front cover as well as the back a bit but kept the UPC, SKU, and disc the same (the disc art had minor alterations, basically they made the center ring from the original run smaller).

That’s likely due to Yukito Kishiro disowning the OVAs.

Plus we know how the OVA's of the past are regarded back in Japan, they probably have know idea who owns Battle Angel.

There actually is a bootleg based off the 2008 release. Sad thing is people have paid $70-$100+ for it before, just ouch. Before the live-action movie came out, you could still get the legitimate release for dirt cheap, after the live-action movie, the prices skyrocketed. Glad I got my copy for just $7 from RightStuf in December 2016.

I get why they used it, but they really should’ve come up with something new. Why hire Yoko Kanno if you’re not going to have her make new music?

One of the most amusing things to me is Vicious. In the anime, I never really thought about his hair being dyed. He is too young to be all white. But in live action you can't not think about it. He twirls his sword, when he never ever made any wasteful motion with it in the anime. It wouldn't have been in character for him. He wasn't about having fun.

The Push For An Alita: Battle Angel Sequel

20th Century Fox released “Alita: Battle Angel” a film that Robert Rodriguez directed back in 2019. Alita became Robert Rodriguez’s highest-grossing film in his career. While the box office stats of “Alita: Battle Angel” has been up to debate, some saying it broke even, with others claiming the film came in at a loss; have used the film’s box office numbers as the reason for the sequel never being greenlit. You pair those box office numbers, a mixed critic and fan reception, and Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and all hope for an “Alita: Battle Angel” sequel is lost.

But not for Robert Rodriguez and the Alita Army that has been clamoring for the film to get a sequel, even “Alita: Battle Angel” star Rosa Salazar has encouraged fans to keep pushing and supporting the film so the numbers can go up and hope that a sequel will get made. Rodriguez is fully aware of the Alita Army and has seen their pleas for the film, “they’re incredible [the Alita Army], every time I open my social media there are so many messages.”

We asked Rodriguez if there have been any new developments or updates on the possibility of an Alita: Battle Angel sequel and what can the Alita Army do to make what seems like a lost dream a reality. “I’m hoping I’m earning some point by doing so much for Disney, cause they own it now [they bought Fox], and that’s why we weren’t able to jump right into the sequel, because of that whole thing. But now they are starting to release some of the Fox stuff.”

“I’m trying to see what happens with Boba Fett, I think that’s going to knock people’s socks off so when that happens I will go in and say, ok, I’ve been here for a while, let’s figure out how we can do Alita whether it’s for streaming or theatrical because it’s such a great property, people love it, I love it and Jim loves it. We [Robert and Jim] just talked about it recently again, about how can we do this, what’s the best way to approach it, I think it’ll be me going in there with him to talk about it because I’m doing a lot of stuff for them [Disney] now.”

So over last weekend, I spun up my old live action Yamato blu - first time watching in a very long time. On first viewing, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I thought it was a pretty poor adaption of the first season. This time? I warmed to it much more.

The problem that the compilation movies have (both the original movie back in the seventies and the Yamato 2199 compilation movie) is they they just chop up the 26 episodes and try and form a coherent narrative from the Iscandar voyage. And two times now it doesn't really work (although the 2199 version is a little better - but it still ain't great).

Here, they take the spirit of the story and reshape the story beats - combining, for example,

[Show spoiler]Yamato evading the Gamalon missile during the ship's initial launch and the test firing of the Wave Motion Gun on Jupiter into one event. Even the ending where they start borrowing from Yamato II, where Sandor and Knox have to blow up the Comet Empire's power core or Yamato's Wave Motion fueled kamikaze attack on the Gamalon planet killer - I'm fine with that.

The problem I have? Changing Desslok from an actual dude into a sparkley hive mind and making the Gamalons and the Iscandarians into one race - although I did like the "Wait, we finally travel all this way, get to Iscandar and they start shooting at us? What the hell!" moment.

But if you can ignore that wrinkle, the movie actually holds up reasonably well. Better than I first gave it credit for. Good action, good music, good pacing - just bits of the 3rd act doesn't work.
