This film is magnificent. A girl reminisces about a holiday she took with her father 20 years prior. It is Charlotte Wells' debut film and that is extraordinary because it feels like a 4th or 5th film by a European Director like Assayas.
The direction is masterful. The performance by Paul Mescal is outstanding. It is very moving and at times I was just stunned by how delicate and tender it is It is the best film of 2022. Go and see it.

Saw this at NYFF. This was a hell of a directorial debut. It would seem to present itself as a pretty simple story of father and daughter on vacation together. Using the camcorder footage, and bookend scenes, it is a memory piece, and by the end, it is much more than it appeared at first. Subtle hints throughout and answers are never fully given, but very effective. Really emotional.
Mescal and Corio give fantastic performances. This probably has one, if not the best, use of Queen and Bowie's Under Pressure that I've ever seen. A24 has kind of dropped the ball with the release. A shame. |

I really enjoyed it while it was playing, but felt like it lacked any real emotional weight. Kinda just a simple, enjoyable slice-of-life film.
Then a few scenes towards the end hit, and by the time I was walking out of the theater to my car, the weight over everything landed extremely hard on my shoulders and I was sobbing on the way home. |

This is why I love films. Absolute gems like this from first time directors.

I decided to watch it again in the theater, this time with captions so I was able to finally catch all of the dialogue. Yeah, it is an absolute masterpiece. 5/5

Same here. I thought it was going to be some kind of end-of-the-world sci-fi film when I first saw the title but after watching the trailer I was instantly sold. I love movies like this. How often do you see people longing for a time spent with a parent? Almost never. I cherish my parents more than anything (my mom passed in 2018). Can't wait to watch the film.

Is this the most over-rated film of the year? Probably.

I saw this back in October. I wasn't really feeling this movie for a while. But I loved the last probably 20 minutes and its emotional impact snuck up on me. The ending is gorgeous and one of the best scenes of the year. Paul Mescal is terrific and should be in the awards conversation. Unfortunately A24 is likely to put all of their focus on Everything Everywhere and The Whale. Understandable but disappointing.
I want to see it again. Something I couldn't imagine doing early on in the film. I can see this playing better for me as a whole on a repeat viewing. I really can't believe how much the ending just made the entire thing work so much better. Possibly an all-time great ending. 8/10 |
